What the frig..?

Postby stypee » Fri Jun 24, 2011 11:51 am

I always wanted an excuse to say that...

Does anyone have Amazon Prime? I had to set it up recently because I needed to get a whole bunch of stuff.. stat!

Any-hoo, I've been browsing their streaming movie selection for Prime Members... Really? REALLY?

Come on.. there's a handful maybe but what the hell?? What am I missing? If anyone knows what MAYBE good on there (aside from the obvious) please, let me know. It's like joining one of those so-called "free movie download sites" that turn out to charge a few bucks and than just end up being crappy public domain movies or something.

If the purpose of amazon prime is to receive free two day shipping on everything then surely free streaming movies is just an added bonus, yes?

Watch random things you've never heard of. Maybe you'll be surprised.

Prime is an experiment also. Amazon is paying for these movies so in essence they are losing money on the streaming service. If it keeps people happy they will keep and expand it. If not, then it will whither away.

Honey, I understand it's a bonus. But sweetie, girlfriend pa-lease! Don't make it so gimmicky, I'd be happier with just the fast shipping, maybe throw in a free mp3 album or magazine subscription or something or perhaps even a nice ham.

I think the problem is one of perception. If they didn't offer videos with Prime people wouldn't expect alot. Kind of like if McDonalds didn't offer fancy coffee people wouldn't miss it, but since they do then they have an obligation to make it great.

My guess, and this is just a paranoid rambling, is that Prime is a bigger experiment than they are letting on. I think Amazon has looked at Netflix and to a lesser extent Hulu and seen that their system is diminishing. People want entertainment offered online the same way it was broadcast to them. A flat fee and an ever increasing amount that rotates out to keep new stuff coming in. I think Amazon will ramp up Prime videos if and when they see a way to hobble Netflix and again to a lesser extent Hulu.

I've been a Prime member for a few years just because I order quite a bit of stuff from Amazon and find the fast shipping worthwhile. The videos are just a cool bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly. The two day shipping and discounted next day shipping is and has always been the selling point. The streaming is nothing more than a throw away bonus. You don't like it? Great, don't watch it. It isn't the reason you sign up for amazon prime.
