Movie contraptions you'd love to have...and...

Postby Attrage » Thu Dec 01, 2011 1:01 am

What's a movie contraption you'd love to have? And just for kicks, what's a contraption from the movies you hope will NEVER exist? And yeah, "contraption" is a loose term, so let your imaginations run wild here people :)

For me, there's no contest, I'd have to go with a Holodeck from Star Trek. That would be the ultimate toy.

but...something I hope never exists, is those little freaky eye-scanning spider-things from Minority Report.
Don't worry darling, its just a hat, belonging to a small man of limited means who lost a fight with a chicken!

The holosuites in Deep Space Nine one-upped the holodecks by having holographic "female companionship." Like we weren't all thinking that the whole time anyway.

One of the biggest for many I think would be if we could have actual 3d images that float in the air. It's been used in many programs like Bones and the movie Minority Report. I'm told that in certain cases they have the technology now but it has limitation.

Actual 3D displays, yes, but the interface would be awkward if you really tried to use it in some cases. Like in Minority Report, how they have to wave their arms all over the place to shift screens. It looks really cool, but when you're home you want to be lazy and use a basic control that involves as little motion as possible.

Agreed. I think that is a gimmick as well as voice control. I prefer the way they use it in Bones where it's controlled by a tablet.

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver. What can't that thing do? Except work on wood (and get your mind out of the gutter people!).

Actually wood is the one thing it doesn't work on. Wood absorbs too much of the sonic energy. I seem to recall at least one episode where that became a problem.

As for a Jetpack, I was going to say they are silly. However there are many days when I see the long stretch ahead of me at work and imagine being able to skip the five minute walk and just fly from one side of the building to the other. A trolly would work as well. Jetpacks are actually not too far off. If someone could come up with a light weight fuel that is. The fuel weight means the pack can only fly for a few seconds at a time.

I'd like to have the holy Hand Grenade rather than the grail. I have a coffee cup after all.

Well, it was the basis of my joke that it didn't work on wood. Lesson learned: make my jokes clearer.
