The Difficulty of Defining Modern Animation

I think the main problem is that most people consider animation to be for children. They avoid them because they think they're all going to be on the same level as a Saturday morning cartoon. This is the mentality that gets the anime DVD's sorted into the childrens' section.

This line has been permanently blurred ever since CGI came about. Like it or not, CGI is animation. Lord of the Rings and Who Framed Roger Rabbit both equally use animation alongside live action. The difference is that one admits it and the other makes it realistic.

At the end of the day, animation of any kind is just another storytelling tool. It's got some huge advantages that nobody ever seems to talk about:
- Seamless effects, i.e. no fake looking monsters
- No cutaways to stuntmen, no trick photography needed
- Unique faces who aren't in other movies
- No budget restraints to tell epic stories
- Family members actually look like each other, believable aging
