RIP Herbert Lom

One of my favorite character actors, best known for playing Inspector Clouseau's boss.

Now Blake Edwards can make that real sequel to "Revenge of the Pink Panther" in the next world.

Just came to post this. There will never another ying-yang team-up like Sellers and Lom; Clouseau without Dreyfus' straight-man-driven-mad schtick would make "The Pink Panther" saga a lot less funny than it already is as it chugged along. So sad.

While he was truly hilarious as Dreyfus, you might want to check out a couple of his more serious roles: as Sam, Johnny's compassionate doctor in "The Dead Zone", and as a very menacing crime boss (with a soft spot for his Dad) in the original "Night and the City".

Oh, yeah, he was great in other work ("The Pope Must Die," "Mark of the Devil," etc.) but, as a diehard fan of the "Panther" series, Dreyfus is the role I will remember Lom most fondly for.

He was also a pretty good Phantom of the Opera, in Terence Fisher's version. Which is, IMHO, a lot better than most critics have given it credit for. He also classed up Jess Franco's version of Dracula, along with Chris Lee.
