Freakazoid! Season 1

Postby SmokestackJones » Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:12 am

Hey Erich,

Excellent review. A long-time fan of the show, yeah, it's all that and a bag o' chips. The only thing that griped my hinder was Bruce Timm. No matter what he said, he couldn't hide the disdain he has for how the show turned out. It's funny, man. The fans like it. Get over yourself, already!

Hey, thanks. The show was a blast. I tend not to expect much from older "kids" shows, but Freakazoid is genuinely funny!

Speaking of funny, watching the extras you'd never know Timm wasn't happy with the show (not that bonus features tend to badmouth their subjects). I was surprised to find out how much he resented the series going in a slapstick comedy direction. Some of the material is a little juvenile, sure, but in all it's a clever parody of comic books, kids shows, and the entertainment industry—a cross between Animaniacs and Timm's Batman. I can't wait to watch Season 2! Fingers crossed they'll actually release it...

Oh yeah, I can hardly wait for the next season.

As for Timm, while he really didn't say anything bad, you could tell by the look on his face that he was doing it under duress and he feels the show is now beneath him. That's a shame because I feel he's one of the leading lights in animation today and I have a great love for Batman: The Animated Series, not to mention what he's done with the DC Universe. It's sad that he has to take such an elitest attitude like that.

While I think "Freakazoid" was a very fun little show, I do understand Bruce Timm's feelings. He had his own vision for the show, and that vision was more or less thrown out. I can't blame him for feeling a little bitter.

By the way, excellent review, Erich.

Now he knows what the director of Kingdom of The Sun over at Disney felt like (sorry, had to get that in... ).

Yeah, you're probably right, I'm probably reading too much into it...I just thought Mr. Timm would appreciate what was done with it (in other words, I was hoping he could appreciate it the way the fans i.e. me, do - I guess not everyone has that kind of sense of humor).

Anyway, it'll make a good blog entry, heh heh heh...

Great review!

Here is a funny story related to the "Toby Danger" episdoe.

I was talking to Lance Falk who grew up a big Johnny Quest fanantic and worked on various JQ projects up to the final series in 1996 (he actually wrote the last episode "The Robot Spies" in an effort to bring JQ back to its original 1960s roots). One day in 1995, his producer stormed in the offices with a video tape in his hands. He called all of the animators together and forced them to watch the Toby Danger episode. At the end, the producer screemed, "Can you believe this?!?! THEY are doing Johnny Quest better then WE are!"
