Ride With The Devil : Criterion

Postby Gabriel Girard » Mon Apr 19, 2010 6:37 pm

I agree with judge Douglas that this is a deeply flawed film. The story is interesting but the characters aren't. What really put me off was the flowery dialogue that didn't fit the characters or the period. I usually enjoy Ang Lee but I couldn't finish this one. I wonder why Criterion chose it over Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Sense And Sensibility.

Thanks for the feedback, Gabriel. I don't actually dislike any Ang Lee film, but Ride With the Devil is one of his more underwhelming efforts (though the flaws have less to do with Lee than they do with the writers and actors). For me, it sits near the bottom of his filmography along with Taking Woodstock as a flawed film that's nonetheless worth a look.
