You are spot on about "Edith's Crisis of Faith", good as Jean Stapleton's acting is. The way the day-to-day around the Bunker's house (with respect to Christmas) is expected to be crass, but it's really laid on thick here, compared to what happened in the show where Edith eluded the rapist.

Dramatically speaking (in contrast to real life), putting Edith through the gauntlet like they did in this season was trying too hard to live up to the earlier, classic seasons where they put out edgy scripts with relative ease!
