And, please, they're African-American movies. Archie Bunker is the only person this side of the '60s to use the word "colored."

I really like Spike Lee and Tyler Perry, and I don't think they would like the term "colored film" used to describe their work...

Pro: Dave Chappelle is funny.

Con: Using the word "colored" in the wrong company can get you beaten up, or even killed.

We like talking about movies; we're less crazy about doing someone's homework assignments for them.

Oh come on guys. It's a slow day on a slow forum, play nice ;)

Here's my take. Black and white is over rated largely because people have forgotten how to use it. One example is that Speilberg wanted that Tom Cruise nazi movie to be in black and white. Why, because it's set in the past and everyone knows the past is black and white. That to me would make the movie more of a spoof of itself than add anything to it. Movies of the past were on poor quality film, not properly cared for, and silent. You don't see that going over well do you.

Black and white can be artistically beautiful because without color one is more focused on detail and contrast. It also removes a lot from the media. Almost like removing sound can draw ones attention to picture detail but in the long term it doesn't work for most movies.

Stephen King's the Mist uses BW on the Blu Ray. I haven't seen it or heard the reason why.
Rocky Horror Picture Show uses (or wanted depending on the version) BW at the beginning. The idea was to show that Brad and Janet had "woken up" to the real world when they entered the castle.

Just found this regrding The Mist
C-H: Well, what do you think the benefits are of a movie in black-and-white?

Darabont: I think it’s a tonal thing. It puts my head right back into that low-budget, Night of the Living Dead-era of filmmaking. Or just prior to that with some of the crazy, big-bug science fiction movies. Which, to my mind, black-and-white kind of enhances in a way. Puts me back into the headspace of that nine, ten, eleven year old kid who stayed up to all hours, this was pre-video mind you, to catch some old movie on the tube ‘cause it was a horror picture. ‘Cause that’s what turned me on; that’s what made me happy. And, funny enough, that’s what we wanted to create with the effects work, which I contend is pretty substantially fantastic effects work considering we had a 4 million dollar effects budget…

One of the things is currentlyy, is it B&W? Or is it desaturated colour? There's a big difference. Look at the restored B&W's from the '40s, especially the Noirs. There's nothing else like them. The use of light and dark is very much as part of the story as the script. Most DoP's today can't match that for experience.
Another thing is set dressing. Look up the colour sequences in a B&W movie. The colours would amaze you. It wasn't how it looks but on how it would look on film. One reason Hitch used chocolate sauce for blood in Psycho.

yes i did get the serious feeling someone has an assignment they can't be bothered doing.

indeed black and white was a masterful tool when cinematographers knew how to use it.
very few know how to use to the best advantage.

the difference between color and b/w imagery cannot be explained easily
much art photography is still produced in black and white
because it strips the image down to its base elements.
like a visual haiku,
done well - like the work of James Wong Howe, Gregg Toland, Robert Krasker
it ares away all distraction until what is left makes a stronger statement then anything in 70mm technicolor

personally i think black and white is much more about storytelling, character and mood

some color flicks do look damn stunning in black and white though Blade Runner and Dark City spring to mind.

Darabont originally wanted to shoot it in Black & White to give it that 50's feel. I'm personally amazed at how good "decolorized" movies look. For example The Man Who Wasn't There was shot in color. But then Roger Deakins is a genius.
