SPAM-A-LOT!!!!

Postby BrettCullum » Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:52 am

Looks like we are getting bombarded with ads up in here! Really annoying because the products don't even fit what we talk about. Ah well!

BTW, Cronenberg rules. CRASH is a great movie. Tim Burton's BATMAN is just as good as Nolan's. Roger Moore had some good moments as Bond. Deckard is not a replicant. And Han shot first!

Keep calm and carry on.

If someone wants to shoot me a PM when the spam is under control again, that'd be nice.....

I thought we were in the clear, then we get two more today.

Do these people make money by posting irrelevently repeatedly on movie forums? If so I'd like to know how. I do that anyway and I'd love to be able to monetize my hobby.

Not really. Spamming doesn't earn very much but it's dirt cheap to do. Telemarketers call 1000 people to sell to 1, spam is closer to a million to 1. Only spam is harder to trace and usually sites like this just delete them since it's almost impossible to actually do anything about it.

It's actually not that hard to do it, a friend of mine's board was getting spammed and he took automatic signups out of the equation, you sign up, and tell him when you want to answer three questions about the subject of the board, he hits you with the questions and you have five minutes to answer them, if you don't, no access, EVER, because he blocks your IP.

I meant it's difficult to get them fined and shut down. Blocking them is all in the software. Some boards have it set to where they can eliminate a person's posts in one click. Molly said this board was missing that. They may want to look into it. I don't like captcha and other intrusive counter measures but some balance has to be found.

That's why I'd previously asked if anybody on the technical side of the site could give their input.

We've always gotten the odd spammer here and then but it was never obstructive. Hell a lot of them were plain funny. But suddenly we get these that hit us with 100+ posts in a row. I'm curious if anything could have triggered this or if it could be a virus.

it's not missing, it's just something Mike S. can do. the rest of us can't.
i have been taking the user name and giving it to him and he's been deleting them en masse

My guess, and it's just that, is that they are having a person manually create the account but then can autopost. The only way to block that is using captcha per post, which sucks. That or restrict the amount of post per day on new accounts. DVDverdict has the tiered system in place to give us the titles. I'm occasionally on some Android based forums and some of them use account restrictions for new members. You have to make 5-10 posts as a junior member. Then someone looks at them to determine if you are real and deserve full status before you can continue posting.

Is there any way to have a software rule to ban any user with 0 posts and includes a hyperink in their first post?

Some boards have all kinds of special rules. You can limit hyperlinks in a post for example. I've been on boards that only allowed one or two per post.
