I first saw this adaptation of Tom Sharpe's novel in the 1980s, and I chanced upon the first two parts (of six, I think) again the other night on a Freeview channel here in Great Britain. It was as good as I remembered it being. First class acting and some of the dialogue still made me smile a week later. I suppose I find it especially funny because it hits just the right note in lampooning Oxbridge college life - caricatured enough to be funny, but not so much as to lose all sense of verisimilitude. Has Porterhouse Blue ever been shown in the USA and Canada and if so, how did it fare in terms of critical reception?
