Got a chance to sample the STAR TREK (Blu-ray) today during a Paramount press event in Santa Monica. This release could easily be the biggest hit of the home entertainment holiday season. There is not one single standard def element to the set, and half of the bonus materials will not be available on DVD.

We were able to watch two deleted scenes which have the Klingons -- yes I said Klingons -- capturing the Narada and interrogating Nero's crew on Rura Penthe. Helmeted (revealing the familiar post-TOS cranial ridgeline) and draped in long, high collared leather coats, they seemed reminiscent of a Nazi SS squad. Sure, it's a tease to their true appearance, but very effective nonetheless.

I don't usually get worked up for releases, but this one had us all feeling like eight year olds with the new Christmas toy catalog.

The STAR TREK three-disc Blu-ray is presented in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital with English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. Special features are as follows:

• Commentary—By director J.J. Abrams, writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Bryan Burk.
