Studio Ghibli on Blu-ray

Postby Movie Mike » Sat Apr 10, 2010 10:50 pm

I was under the impression that along with Ponyo a slew of other Miyazaki movies where making their way to Blu-ray, has anybody heard if we are getting them in the near future?

There are no Ghibli titles on Disney's release schedule through October 2010.

The fact that they released Deluxe DVD only editions of Kiki, Totoro, and Howl's at the same time the Blu-ray of Ponyo was released didn't bode well. :?

That's not to say it won't happen. Disney has done a marvelous job authoring and marketing their Blu-ray titles, so those special edition DVDs may have been a way to gauge interest in Miyazaki's older films. We'll have to wait and see. SPIRITED AWAY is especially deserving of the high-def treatment.

With Disney it's tough to call. On one hand they are strong supporters of the format. On the other they are notorious for locking up older movies even if the demand is high, much less questionable.

I think the best bet is if a new Ghibli lights up America like Castle in the Sky did.

Nice! I'd be happy with this and Mononoke.
