Eden of the East

I'm thinking of picking this up, but reviews suggest that it doesn't fully resolve itself, and the follow up movies aren't available in North America yet. Does anyone know if the movies were planned as an integral part of the story, or were they greenlit after the series were a success? I don't mind loose ends if they were built into the series, but if the movies were planned ahead of time as an essential conclusion, I'd rather wait until the whole shebang is available here.
