The Thaw

The Thaw is this week's direct to DVD Val Kilmer installment which is basically a 90 minute X-Files episode that treads all to familiar ground. A research station up in the Arctic discover a thawed Woolly Mammoth that unfortunately is infected with a deadly parasite. Val Kilmer plays Dr. David Kruipen an environmentalist who thinks global infection might make the population sit up and take notice, so he doesn't tell the arriving students of the nasty bugs waiting for them. The story has your standard characters who freak out as paranoia runs rampant, and even has one who destroys the chopper so that the infection can't spread. Not a bad movie, and definitely a step up from Val's last few, but really nothing to warrant a rental. Watch it if you catch it on late night TV

It's part of a series of DVDs from LIONSGATE that they are promoting as THE GHOST HOUSE UNDERGROUND. Basically we get eight indenpendent films hand picked and endorsed by Sam Raimi and his producer Rob Tapert. Our review hits this week, as well as another one from the line called SEVENTH MOON. I found SEVENTH MOON to be actually really good, although it is from Ed Sanchez who did THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and has the signature shaky cam going on!

Should be an interesting series although you sound like you were not terribly impressed with THE THAW. I am just always amazed when a horror movie doesn't suck these days.

I also saw one of the films from this line over the weekend: The Children. Definitely far better than I expected it to be; if you're looking for something to add to this month's horror viewing, you could do a lot worse.

I found The Children to be an effectively creepy film and cements my belief that kids aren't to be trusted. I loved how the parents are first hindered by the staunch disbelief that their kids have turned into brutal killers and then when the reality is undeniable they must find out if they have what it takes to bash their little heads into save themselves.
