Speed Racer (Blu-ray) - $10 at Best Buy online (which you can pick-up at a nearby store if they have it in stock). Lots of $10 BD titles there, the same one's that are also $10 at BB stores except for "Speed Racer" and "The Postman" (which ring at their $16.99 marked price).

So let me get this straight Mr. Mancini. You built a multi-national manufacturing conglomerate from the ground up, liquidated billions in research and development, faked your own death, reappeared and declared yourself "Lord Annhililatious: The Living Death That Kills", murdered the equivelant of the population of Rhode Island, spent the better part of thirty years in prison, managed to hornswoggle the american people into not only forgiving you, but electing you president, allowing you to commission NASA to build a time displacement device, just so you could go back in time and erase Ross Bagdasarian's bloodline from the face of history?

That had to be a tough one to put on a theater's marquee! Anyway, a terrific film. :)

No Blu-rays or DVDs yet....Reckless Records in Chicago will change that.....but I did pick up the new song cycle from David Bryne & Fatboy Slim about the life of Imelda Marcos called Here Lies Love. Lets just say I'm already on my third run through the double CD set.

It's a shame that Andrew Dominik hasn't popped up since. He's been attached to an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "Cities of the Plain" but there are doubts it will see the screen. I've heard that "Assassination" had a pretty troubled post production period, and that could be the reason for his slow return. At any rate, he reminds me of a young Terrance Malik, and that certainly ain't a bad thing. Whatever he does, i'll be there.

Likewise. I was very worried about the film due to all the rumors running around about how many post-production problems the movie had, but it turned out to be one of my favorite films of 2007. Great in just about every department... the script, the acting, Roger Deakins' cinematography, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' score... wow.

Cinema, Happiness: The Short Films of Karpo Godina (1968-1972) - "free" with the $10 purchase of the March/April issue of 'The Believers' magazine. Bought it based on this glowing review in Tuesday's edition of The New York Times (which rarely wastes its weekly DVD recommendations section on magazine freebies). Think Dušan Makavejev-type Yugoslavian Black Wave movies, except shorter. ;-)

From the last couple of weeks:
Bigger Than Life
Did You Hear About the Morgans?
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Speed Racer (didn't like this when I saw it in theaters, but a sneaking suspicion that I might enjoy it more, coupled with its $5 price tag at Wal Mart sealed the deal)

i went fishing the other night
that's when i go to the bull moose video
and buy about 20 bucks worth of basically crap hoping to find something worth watching.
i generally look for anything old and obscure or on a mongrel label
usually @ 2.97 or 3.97 - i got about 7 films for my 20 bucks.

so far i caught
Murder by Dawn (1932) forgettable old house mystery with Kenneth Strickfaden's Frankenstein Machines in it.
The Phantom from 10000 Leagues (1955) which is absolutely awful, but it has a guy in a monster suit tipping over row boats.
and i found Palooka (1934) with Jimmy Durante, Robt Armstrong and others including Thelma Todd - for 2.97 well worth the money. I didn't even know it was out there.

I also picked up Land that Time Forgot and People that Time Forgot which i haven't seen since i saw them 1st run, it should be interesting.

i bought the new Sherlock Holmes sight unseen...aside from it being a bit too dark (unless that is my TV) it is a smashing good film.

The House of the Seven Gables (1940) from the universal Vault Collection came in the mail.

I have made a list of all the RKO 'lost' films, Warner Archive film and Universal Vaults that I WANT but can't afford and I am going to TRY to buy one once a week or at least every two weeks. the damn releases are getting ahead of me - there's a bunch of Ginger Rogers and Marie Dressler's, and Myrna Loys etc...it's painful not to have them.

Found a Canadian-only release of Bob le Flambeur, but it's looking like it has no English subtitles, so I'm trying to decide if I should keep it and try to make sense of the plot (and maybe regain some of my French while I'm at it) or take it back. HMV keeps bringing in these French-only releases from Maple pictures (Port of Shadows is another). I can only imagine how someone with no knowledge of French would feel if they popped in their new DVD and found it incomprehensible.

i can't believe i was missing 1943 Phantom of the Opera
oddly no one else was missing it either..the new copy i bought off the shelf for 9.97
was most likely made in 2000 as it still had the original cobweb design cellophane.

Also picked up Universal's Inner Sanctum collection. Gotta have more Lon Chaney JR

also picked up a very strange film by accident
what i thought was an 'old'public domain film from Alpha
turned out to be a NEW film done digitally in black and white against blue screen
with bits of public domain films edited in: Terror in the Pharaoh's Tomb (2007)
it is no where as good as The Call of Cthulhu is a 2005 but they seemed to have a lot of fun making it.
