Coupons, discounted Blu-rays and the 2 for 3 sale at B&N saw me bring home Die Hard, Crimson Tide and the original The Day The Earth Stood Still. I'm especially looking forward to watching Crimson Tide since I have read that it is one beautiful looking hi-def transfer.

ALF has been busy at Winnipeg Blue Bombers training camp and hasn't had much time to post his purchases. He'll be posting his purchases on the field from now on.

Where was this 2 for $20 deal for these two movies? This sounds like too good a deal to pass up.

Future Shop.

I picked up Hot Fuzz and Dark City Blu's.
I also got Taken Blu at WalMart. $14.83. Don't know if that was a mistake or not. They had other copies at $22.

J-L. Godard's A Woman Is A Woman and Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (both Criterion) from Deep Discount. Was debating whether to pick-up the Blu-ray for Nic Roeg's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" (seen the movie and liked it but not enough to own it) because, well, it's a soon-to-be-OOP Criterion Blu-ray. Couldn't pull the trigger at the DD sale but there's still time (and leftover stock) if I change my mind...

I didn't own the SE DVD. Regardless, word from Zoetrope is that the Blu-ray is actually the best representation of the original release prints, and that all prior home video releases were artificially brightened and re-color timed for greater saturation. I saw the movie in the theaters in '92, but couldn't begin to tell you how the BD matches up. I'll have to take Zoetrope's word for it. In any event, the BD is nothing to write home about, but it's not a bad transfer consider all of the movie's in-camera effects and whatnot.

Yeah, i was perfectly fine with it as well. Then again, i was shocked to hear about the controversy over The good, the Bad, and the Ugly, i thought that looked gorgeous.

The transfer for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was definitely DNR'd a bit in order to hide some of the grain inherent in a Techniscope flick, but it's still a gorgeous picture (given the realities of the source) -- definitely not the crime against humanity that technofile dweebs, who somehow seem to believe that all movies are made in a sphere of ideal circumstances and modern technology, claim.

My favorite instance of tech geek nonsense was some dude saying he saw The Searchers in the theater in 1956 and the color-timing on the Blu-ray does not match the original theatrical presentation (even though the dudes who created the high def master say they matched it to an earlier 35mm print than any previous home video master). Yeah, buddy, you remember exactly what hue of blue the sky was in a movie you saw over 5 decades ago. Um, no...just no.

I mean, in some instances, i can understand it (Near Dark and Pan's Labyrinth come to mind), and then there are the other times they're moaning about too much grain (300 and Minority Report). The only time you worry about a tehcnophile dweeb is when they stop bitchin. Sheesh.

I haven't read a digital bits review in years. Again, i just want to know if it looks good, not how closely it preserves the natural presentation of a 40 plus year old film that looked like grainy crap filled with dirt and scratches when all but the 1.27 percent of the population of this magnificent spinning marble who got to see it at some prestigious landmark theatre on opening night and can still remember EVERY INFINITESIMAL DETAIL of the quality of the print actually got to see the damn film, which was miscolored by technicolor to begin with.

Yes the director's vision is important, the aesthetic of the film is important, and some transfers do get completely borked by digital meddling (see Pan's Labyrinth, or Near Dark), and other films do suffer visually because the discs err a little TOO closely to the source (see 300, which is a total grainfest), but these diatribes against stuff like Fellowship of the Ring or The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly have got to stop. They aren't just ridiculous, they're preposterous. How does "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" look on Blu-ray? Better than it ever has. That's all you, I, We need to know.

Tropic Thunder
28 Days Later
Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition
Zodiac: Directors Cut

Check your Big Lots if you have one. I got that Zodiac disc for $5 new. They had a giant palette of Warner stuff including the 2 Disc Blade Runner, 4 Disc Superman, 2 Disc Superman II, 2 Disc Bonnie and Clyde, all the Lethal Weapons, and some assorted Paramount titles. The DC of Zodiac was a rarity, only two in the lot, while there were well over a dozen single disc theatrical editions.

Not a Blu-ray or a DVD or a new disc player or anything but I have to share this.

Image

Craig Ferguson's autograph! This is my favorite autograph I've ever gotten.

Went with two of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers players (Alex Brink (went to his hotel room first and chatted for about an hour and a half) and Jabari Arthur) to go see Get Him to the Greek (Alex paid for my movie ticket!). f--- hilarious movie! I buy all my movies on Blu-ray and DVD and this has been the first time in a long time that I've been to a theatre.

^^^ First, who got Ferguson's autograph: you or ALF? Second, who got to hang out with the B.Bombers: you or ALF? Because I can totally see Craig or NHL players going bonkers for ALF, but you thepegsdave? You're Turtle from "Entourage" (and ALF's Vincent Chase). ;-)

Got Wong Kar-Wai's CHUNKING EXPRESS (Criterion Blu-ray) on a blind-buy whim.

Both of us got Craig's autograph. ALF wants to step back into late-night television and he thought the best way to do it was to ask for Ferguson's autograph and then see if he can get a role as one of the puppets on the show. He'd love to be in the opening when Sid the cursing rabbit is on. ALF said he can swear just as much as Sid.

It was me who was hanging out with the Blue Bombers players. I go to all the practices and I've become friends with quite a few of the players and coaches. ALF does come to practice every once and awhile and he usually gets reactions like "holy shit it's ALF! I haven't seen him since the late 80's." I (thepegsdave) wear dress shirts with a t-shirt over top of it with Otis Redding, Fred Sanford, Fonzie (says "Sit on it") or a "What'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" shirt.

ALF likes holding onto the back of my wheelchair while we're heading to Bomber practice with our Tim Hortons coffee.
