Region 2 Doctor Who Releases

Postby HGervais » Wed Jul 25, 2007 6:37 pm

I am really glad I never popped for the R1 boxset of The Key to Time as this R2 looks really, really sweet. Details from DVD Times.

2Entertain announced two further titles in this year's Classic Who release schedule. September 3rd will see the Jon Pertwee four-parter The Time Warrior hit the shelves, followed on the 24th by the season-spanning The Key To Time starring Tom Baker.

The Time Warrior was the first story of Doctor Who's eleventh season, first broadcast over the Christmas period in 1974, and saw the introduction of Elisabeth Sladen as one of the Doctor's most popular companions Sarah Jane Smith. The intrepid journalist becomes embroiled in the Doctor's adventures when she investigates strange goings-on at a local research centre. Before she knows it, she finds herself back in the middle ages and having to come to terms with not only the white haired chap who can travel through time and space, but an aggressive Sontaran called Linx and the aggressive medieval robber baron going by the name Irongron.

UPDATE - extras for this title have now been announced by the Restoration Team and are as follows:

-Commentary with actress Elisabeth Sladen, producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks
-Beginning the End (30'13) in which cast and crew talk about the making of this story, partially shot on location at Peckforton Castle. With actors Elisabeth Sladen, Donald Pelmear and Jeremy Bulloch, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and designer Keith Cheetham. Narrated by Simon Ockenden.
-Trails and Continuity (1' 08") - BBC1 trails and continuity, recreated from off-air home audio recordings.
-CGI Effects - view the story with optional new video effects.
-1974 Doctor Who Annual - in Adobe pdf format for viewing on PC or Mac.
-Photo Gallery
-Coming Soon Trailer
-Radio Times Listings - in pdf format
-Easter Eggs

The Key To Time, first shown in 1978-9, has been one of the most eagerly-awaited Who releases so far (as well as one of the most rumoured!) Already available on Region One with an inferior picture quality and few extras, it now comes to Region Two with an extraordinary array of supplementary material. Spanning all six stories of the sixteenth season, the epic follows the attempt by the Fourth Doctor and his new companion, the imperious Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm), in their quest to track down the six pieces of the eponymous key, a device of unimaginable power. Featuring amongst other delights Douglas Adams's debut script The Pirate Planet, a spoof of The Prisoner of Zenda in The Androids of Tara and the series's 100th story The Stones of Blood this release promises to be a highlight of the year.

In the same boat as you man in that I managed to avoid a purchase of the previous box :) . Any idea when the Region 1 of this release will make it over hear (I read at the restoration team website that the extras were made in order to make it worthwhile for region one owners to upgrade).

Region 1 releases have typically followed the region 2 discs within 3 to 6 months.

On the other hand, it's been a good while since the McGann movie was released on Region 2, and there's been no sign of a Region 1 release as yet.

That is probably more a rights issue with Fox than anything else. BBC has gotten pretty regular in their release patterns for vintage Who, especially in the past couple of years.

That sounds very possible. And when you factor Universal into the equation, that must make it even more complex.

At least there's no real demand for that movie. Perhaps we all just forget it and move on.

Actually the Doctor Who tele-movies isn't that bad. Let me rephrase, there are some aspects to it that aren't that bad. Seeing McCoy pass the torch is kind of nice and McGann quickly shows he could have been a pretty good Doctor. Yes a lot of it feels like Doctor Who being put through a distinctly americanized blender but I've seen much worse pilots that got picked up for series. I guess since I saw the American version very early in my Who watching days the flaws in it didn't stand out quite so vividly for me. Still, if you are a Who fan it is worth seeing and there are some things in there to enjoy.

Well, actually, McGann has been playing the Doctor in audio-only adventures for quite some time now, both on the BBC and the Big Finish productions.

Oh I know. I have several of them staring at me. The point was that the Fox movie should not just be dismissed. There were things in there that were good and McGann as the Doctor was one of them.

I heartly agree with you on that one. I'm hoping that the revival will eventually address the movie's events (and, if it has, DON'T SPOIL IT FOR ME!).

Oh, by the way, I saw on Amazon that "Time-Flight" and "Arc of Infinity" are set for Region 1 release later this year. No details as yet, though.

Kind of my dream project, and if I had access to Russell T. Davies & the BBC it is the thing I would pitch....would be a huge ass Time War maxi-series. I'm thinking the first 6 or 7 hours features Paul McGann while the final 2 or 3 hours feature a newly regenerated Eccleston. I'd open with the McGann Doctor in mid-adventure with a companion we have never met before and finish with Eccleston on his way to Earth to fight the Autons and his first meeting with Rose Tyler.

Yeah the region 2 issue comes out August 6.

WOW! That would be really cool!
I recently transferred my vhs tape of the original braodcast of the McGann film to DVD ( And Fox's "Generation X").
I thought about trying to find a region 2 copy of the DVD, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I understand that Davies has said he wouldn't mind having the Time War depicted, but in a different medium than the TV series.

Next up is another Tom Baker story, Planet of Evil. After that is Destiny of the Daleks which is getting a stand-alone release and which also will be part of a Davros box set.

"Planet of Evil" is one of the good ones, and a fine example of the early Tom Baker period, for my money the most consistently good period of the series.

Still, I'm surprised they haven't released "Deadly Assassin" yet.

It's the first story with just Sarah Jane & the Doctor after they wrote Harry out, right? Isn't it also the first of what would become the show's "gothic" period under Hinchcliffe? I know I've seen it but we are talking maybe 15 or 20 years.

Yes, it's right after "Terror of the Zygons", when Harry left. However, the show was pretty much adding Gothic touches as far back as the first Hunchcliffe serial, "The Ark in Space".

Yeah but this is one which did the riff on Jekyll & Hyde, right? And I need to go back and watch "The Ark In Space."

Yes, that's one of the plotlines, along with the time-honored idea of the scientist who blunders forth with his experiments, oblivious to the cost in lives. Like I said, good story with fine acting by Frederick Jaeger as Sorenson, the scientist in question.

Oh, and I meant "Hinchcliffe". Gotta learn to proof-read these things.

Destiny of the Daleks will also contain roughly the same material as the separate DVD of the story being released on the same day. However, the box set will contain a two-disc version of Remembrance of the Daleks, with the following extras:

-Commentary with actors Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred
-Back to School - Cast and crew talk about the making of the story accompanied by rare behind-the-scenes material
-Remembrances - Cast and crew talk about the influences and references to other Doctor Who adventures that are spread throughout the story
-Extended and Deleted Scenes
-Outtakes
-Multi-Angle Sequences - allowing the viewer to watch Ace's escape from the Chemistry lab and the Daleks blowing up the large gates from one of two camera angles
-Trails and Continuity
-Photo Gallery
-Isolated Music
-Radio Times Listings
-Subtitles
-Dolby Digital 5.1 mix

The documentaries "Back to School" and "Remembrances" are new, and are not found on the previously released single DVD version of Remembrance of the Daleks. The original Region 2 DVD of Remembrance also had a few missing effects shots, which will be restored in the box set version.

The set will also include a new documentary on the character and history of Davros, titled "Davros Connections".

Finally, the box set will contain eight audio dramas from Big Finish Productions starring Terry Molloy as Davros. The stories are Davros (starring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor), The Juggernauts (also starring Colin Baker), Terror Firma (starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor), the four parts of the miniseries I, Davros, and a new audio drama, The Davros Mission, written by Nicholas Briggs. The BBC site describes this new story, specially commissioned for the DVD box set, thus: "Davros is taken by the Daleks for trial and imminent execution. But even in his darkest hour, he finds allies and an insatiable cunning to survive..."

Only 10,000 of the individually numbered box sets will be issued.

For the two or three people around here who care...."Doctor Who and the Silurians" will probably be the first classic Who release of 2008. This 7-part Pertwee story was the introduction of the Silurians and the disc looks to have the usual mini-documentaries and features.

I haven't seen this one in a while. As I recall, it's rather overlong at 7 episodes, but it does have a pretty thoughtful tone at times, sets up the Pertwee Doctor as an anti-establishment figure, and inspired one of the show's more lingering philosophical arguments: "Was Lethbridge-Stewart right in what he did at the end?" Oh, and look for a pre-Avon Paul Darrow as the UNIT captain du jour, and Geoffrey Palmer as a government minister.

This one I've read about but never seen and I would argue that most anything over 4 or 5 episodes long was usually too long.

This from Outpost Gallifrey:

The British Board of Film Classification has passed a number of extras for the DVD release of The Sea Devils in the UK.

Included on it will be a 36min 35sec documentary entitled Hello Sailor! - Making The Sea Devils, plus a photo gallery and continuities.

The six-part story was classified on October 29. Outpost Gallifrey reported in September that the Jon Pertwee adventure would be part of a three-story box set also comprising Doctor Who and the Silurians and Warriors of the Deep.

It was revealed in May that The Sea Devils was being prepared for release on DVD, with the news that the Restoration Team were hoping to track down naval personnel who were involved with or who witnessed the filming - in particular, a rating believed to have shot some cine footage.

A release date for the box set has not yet been announced but the BBFC classified Warriors of the Deep on November 1 - the same day it did the extras for The Sea Devils.

Extras for Doctor Who and the Silurians were classified on October 31, and the story was classified on November 1 - with episode seven listed as "Episode 7/Doctor Who - Next Week", which implies a contemporaneous trailer for The Ambassadors of Death is included at the end.

The release is being timed to coincide with the appearance of the Sontarans in Series Four. Extras on the disc include a commentary with actors Louise Jameson and John Leeson, the script editor Anthony Read and visual effects designer Matt Irvine.

As previously announced a number of documentaries are included. Out of Time is a look at the making of the story, The Changing face of Gallifrey, asks how the portrayal of the Time Lords has changed over the years, The Elusive David Agnew investigates the mysterious writer of the story and Deleted Scenes has previously cut scenes from the film inserts in Episodes five and six.

May will also see the release of a box set entitled Bred for War. This will include the new release of The Invasion of Time along with the previously released Sontaran stories, The Time Warrior, The Sontaran Experiment and The Two Doctors.

2 Entertain and The Restoration Team have announced what we can expect in the way of classic Doctor Who releases for 2009. Information is stolen.....borrowed from Outpost Gallifrey.

A new colourised version of Planet of the Daleks is due for release on DVD this year as revealed in this month's Doctor Who Magazine. Episode three of the 1973 Jon Pertwee story previously only existed in the BBC archive as a black and white film recording. However, using partly the same process recently used on an old episode of Dad's Army ("Room at the Bottom", broadcast on BBC2 last month in colour for the first time in 39 years) using information contained in the film print, and partly artificial re-colouring in the United States, colour has been restored to the episode. The story will be released as a box set with Frontier in Space, which sees the Doctor meet the Draconians and features the last appearance of Roger Delgado as the Master. Full details of the restoration of episode three of Planet of the Daleks can be found in an article on the Restoration Team website.

The current release schedule is subject to change
