First, the set-up:

Back in the 70's, Shatner was once a celebrity guest on "$20,000 Pyramid" and was utterly terrible, even fouling up in the Winner's Circle and costing a contestant $20,000. So, at the end of the week, when a show ran short, Shatner was given about 20 seconds to try and win at Pyramid by himself.

Now, the punchline:

Brilliant -- because of Damon's involvement. "When you were needlessly flying back and forth between New York and L.A. in one day... she was definitely f***ing Matt Damon."

Within the longer-running joke about Damon getting bumped from Kimmel's show, or the show always "running out of time" before Damon gets a chance to speak, it's a great payoff.

Bette Midler performing one of my all time favorite songs, "Skylark" on the Tonight Show mid 1980's. Not my favorite version of it (she does a spectacular version on one of her earlier albums), but the American Idols can surely take a lesson from her performance. You don't always have to do the cheesey arm-extended-to-the-audience-with-the-palm-up gesture. Sometimes just standing there, selling it from deep within your soul, does the trick.
