Start Saving Your Pennies, Stypee

Postby Dan Mancini » Tue Jul 17, 2007 11:14 am

From The Digital Bits:

In announcement news today, Image Entertainment has revealed a new Caligula: Four-Disc Imperial Edition DVD for release on 10/2 (SRP $39.99). The set will include both the uncensored and unrated theatrical cut, as well as a pre-release version containing more never-before-seen footage. Extras will also be extensive, including audio commentary with Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren, a new interview with director Tinto Brass, 2 versions of the Making of Caligula documentary, hours of deleted and alternate footage, the soundtrack on CD, Gore Vidal's screenplay on DVD-ROM and much more. It sounds like an impressive set.

Personally, I could go the rest of my life without suffering through Caligula again, but the McDowell-Mirren commentary piques my interest.

Caligua was gloriously trashy (much like Showgirls) and i had no real desire to see it again.
Having said that, the commentary track intrigues the hell out of me.

This is AWESOME news!!! I'm going to try and pre-order this sucker. Now all I need is the book written about the production of the film and all things will be complete :) Thanks for posting Dan!!

I don't know if this is in good taste but the only thing good about Cailigula is the crotch-shot of that hot girl when the guy (?) picks her up off the floor at the end of the movie.

By which you mean, of course, that the apocalypse will begin.

I'm not sure which is more disturbing: that that's your favorite part of the movie, or that you don't know whether saying so is in good taste.

I think a screen-grab of that moment would've helped settle the debate.

Hey, I'm all over this release... I can't believe Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren catually recorded a commentary track for this classic bit of trash cinema! Ther's no defending the film, really, but you have to admit it's pretty surreal watching such an amazing cast flounder about... I'm pretty sure McDowell had a good idea what kind of production he was really getting involved with, but the others were somehow clueless. I'va always found Caligula totally watchable... and not just for all the t & a... although it certainly helps... (most of it is very unerotic, though)

You are correct, of course; there are tons of much better films that deserve a SE... or even a decent R1 release, for that matter... but I actually dig this movie enough that I'd be willing to upgrade from my copy of the original release. The transfer on that disc was legendary in its awfulness, so if they can clean it up... plus the commentary and other extras (forget the R-rated version, though.. what a waste...)? I'm there!

Midget sex aside, I found this a very intriguing movie

Peter O'toole was awesome as the degenerate yet very sane emperor, and Malcolm was nearly as good as the not so sane and even more degenerate heir.

Power corrupts and absolute....ya ya you know the rest, well this film really caputres that theme, I my hate our current political state but damn, things sure could be a lot worse. Caligula almost gives you insight into Saddams Iraq or even N. Korea or any other despotic or psuedodesepotic dictatorial regime. Plus its got that T&A factor that keeps the teens inteested. Yes teens should not be watching X rated filth but the last time I saw this was as a teenager, thats just the way it is with these things.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive...those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I heard that anyone who actually purchases this release will be allowed to be "Empreror" for a day.

True,True. I love John Hurt's Caligula. Even though I own the DVD set I still have my VHS copies of the Masterpiece Theater broadcasts just for the Alastair Cooke (sic?) comments before and after the episodes. Very informative.

Those were the days when Masterpiece Theater really was what it's title proclaimed. Just about every series grabbed me to the point where I was counting the days till the next installment and felt a sense of loss after the last episode was done. Every one of the titles you mention were like that. Some others that have been on DVD like The Duchess of Duke Streer, Edward and Mrs. Simpson, and The Flame Trees of Thika also were favorites.
