A Bridge Too Far.

Postby Kevin » Fri Jun 13, 2008 2:38 pm

It seems that Judge Keefer is talking about Battle of Britain when he's reviewing A Bridge Too Far.

I think it's more apprioriate to mention that a person interested in historical war movies and or read the Ryan book will appreciate/understand it more than most people, probably more than the reviewing judge.

Trick is to fast forward through any footage shot on the ground and just watch the aircraft. Wordlessly. Don't mention that German machines (BF-109s and HE-111s) are powered by Rolls-Royce engines.

I question The Judge, because how can he review something he doesn't understand?

I feel he's judging it too much as a movie, but not completely understanding the situation.

Exactly. It is a movie and you have to judge it on those, and only those, terms.

Harold, I don't think you completely understand the situation.

I don't fault them for that. At the time the movie was made, there were absolutely NO airworthy Daimler-Benz DB601 or Junkers Jumo 211 engines in existence. The movie company resorted to purchasing the entire Spanish air force contingent of surplus "Heinkels" and "Messerchmitts", which were in actuality license-built CASA-111s and HA-1112s. The scarcity of German engines meant that the Spanish versions used RR Merlins.

It's hard for me to imagine just watching the flying scenes in the movie, without the backstory. You have to get a feel for the uncertainty of the time, and the desperate measures that were undertaken by the British to counter the German bomber offensive, and for that you need to watch the scenes with the British commanders. The silly romance between Christopher Plummer and Susannah York should be avoided at all costs (except for Plummer's glorious prewar MG!).

By the way, viewing this DVD with my upconverting Pioneer Elite DV-79avi player and Elite plasma results in a near-theatrical image, incredible for a movie of this vintage.
