"You elitist snob, what are you reading?" Holiday '08

It's been a shake since we've had one of these, and since I have a pathological need to know every aspect of everyone here's sad little lives, what books are we currently reading?

The Lies of Locke Lamora - After blind buying on a recommendation, I can say that from the first 117 pages alone this is one of the better fantasy novels I've read in quite some time. The "What makes a bastard and why do they steal?" exchange for me was worth the purchase alone. When I had to drop my fiancee off at the card store for a moment, I ran up the road to Chapters and picked up the next part of the series, Red Seas Under Red Skies.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Have never read it before. It's good so far.

The new Lennon biography....which I actually finished so I'm not technically reading it anymore....close enough though...

Not the hatchet job that "The Lives of John Lennon" was, but it does contain new comments from McCartney. etc.
Actually the "Lives of John Lennon" was a little over-reviled because no one wanted to believe that Lennon was just a brilliant songwriter, but not a god or something....his jealousy and violent nature had been well known and confirmed by many sources to that point anyway. Did anyone actually believe he practiced what he preached any more than anyone else?

The new biography "John Lennon...A Life" underscores the same flaws in the man. Though not as rapaciously.

Did you get the foil-y covered Red Seas? They have the smaller edition to match with the smaller edition of Lies there as well, it was just stacked on the floor immediately behind ya if you're looking at the shelf.

I can't believe I'm going to take advice from you two, but I guess I'll pick this up. Bastards.

As for me, I'm reading Don DeLillo's Falling Man and Laurent Bouzereau's The Cutting Room Floor.

With all the stuff going on with Israel right now, I thought I'd re-read Art Speigelman's Maus.

Some books I got for Christmas:
Marvel Chronicles - a huge coffee table book that's pretty cool.
Batmanga - Book full of Japanese Batman collectibles from the 60's and comics that were produced there as well.
Very cool.
DC Vault - One of those "History of..." books with cool reproductions of old swag.
Also read the first two issues of The Umbrella Academy: Dallas. Liking it.
And I just got the first issue of Farscape the comic. Will read that later.

it was a shame when it went out of fashion as assigned reading.

I've been really, really bad with my reading as of late.

But right now, I'm going through:

The Outlander-Gil Adamson
Desolation Angels-Jack Kerouac
The Rum Diary-Hunter S. Thompson
The Portable Dorothy Parker-Dorothy Parker

Well, that was disappointing. The author ended that novel the exact same way she ended another. Wasn't a great ending to begin with, either.

On to re-reading the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn.

Just finished reading Watchmen again to prepare for the movie. Great stuff.

Currently reading:

Irreligion by John Allen Paulos, which is a neat little dissection of the flaws in the arguments for theism
The Teapot Dome Scandal, by Laton McCartney, about corporate greed and government corruption in the Harding administration. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses, in the original French, just to keep up reading skills.

Si tu lis Les Liaisons dangereuses ta compréhension du français écrit doit être très bonne. En plus c'est un excellent livre!

That's a weird coincidence I'm almost finished with it. I loved it and must say I didn't find it difficult at all; but then I love mythology.

Next a moret arduous ask : reading The Fountainhead

I say attempting more out of a "free time" thing than a struggle with the book. Lately i find i've been captivated by the mythology surrounding Tolkien's stuff. Between now and March i'll probably gobble up a bunch of ancillliary stuff leading up to my annual reading of Lord of the Rings in the spring.
