Canadians, shout out!

Canadians, shout out!

Postby Stubblecat » Sun Jan 11, 2009 11:24 am

I'm still fairly new here and I've noticed quite a few Canadians around this board, so it seemed like a good idea for a collective Canuck shout-out.

Stubblecat here, living in Kitchener, Ontario for the last decade, but most of the previous 27 years was spent in my two homes of Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

I also did 5 years in Comox, B.C. back in the 80s.

I miss Nova Scotia donairs, which (for those of you who don't know) is a mountain of sliced spicy beef-like mystery meat wrapped in a soft pita with tomatoes, onions and a sweet sauce made mostly of evaporated milk, sugar and vinegar. It's a hybrid Greek/Lebanese thing. It looks like this:
Image

The meat is sliced too thin, but it's the best picture I could wrangle.

Not pretty, but pretty tasty. They make something like it here in Ontario, but it's all wrong.

Lived about 40 years in Toronto, but now I'm in the small city of London Ontario. The hardest thing to get use to in this town is the lack of decent video stores, in Toronto there was no problem tracking obscure movies but here in London it just plain sucks. If it didn't have a major theatrical release in the last ten years good luck finding it. So I now rely on Amazon for those kind of purchases.

Do they have donairs in Newfoundland? I know they're in PEI and most of New Brunswick...

Oh hell yes.

We have family come home yearly and actually leave with the things wrapped in tin-foil, frozen and stuffed in a cooler bag with their carry-on luggage.

I think they're rancid myself. Donair sauce is awesome for dipping garlic fingers, but donair meat, man... ugh... That's some nasty business.

I found a link which has the original King Of Donair recipe from Halifax. It's on a foodie blog, and it pretty accurately (and hilariously) describes the true essence of eating Donairs in Halifax.

Here's the link: http://saveyourfork.wordpress.com/2006/ ... f-donairs/

Me and wife are totally making them this weekend. It will interfere slightly with my fasting in preparation for my daughter's pool party in 2 weeks (can't be showing off any Christmas flab), but it'll be worth it.

Odd how this thread went from being about Canadians to being about donairs.

And aren't Donairs Greek? That just ain't Canadian.

Can we get back to talking about beer, and hockey, and poutine now?

Hi Stubblecat!
Another Canadian here (and I'm late to the party, as usual).
I'm originally from St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia (which is just a little southward of Halifax/Dartmouth). I've been living in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the past 10 years...
.. and we have donairs here. Wonderful, wonderful donairs (from Jack's Pizza on University Ave. - I just had one just last night and it was ooey, gooey GOOD!).

Ah, King of Donairs on "pizza corner" in Halifax.
I do fondly remember them well.

Looks tasty to me!
I'd eat it!
Here in Pittsburgh, PA we have the famous Primanti's sandwich:
Image
Basically is a steak patty, cheese, with french fries and vinegar-based cole slaw, all on thick, hard crust, italian bread.
MMMMMmmmmmm.....
The battery in the picture is for size reference.

I was kind of hoping it came with the battery.

When they invented this sandwich, did they just empty the refrigerator of whatever they had on hand, and slip in between a couple of loaves of bread?

I also love the traditional "Newfie Scoff" - Dump a shitload of vegetables of all shapes and sizes into a 5 gallon pot with a side of salt meat, boil until it can be drank through a straw, dump onto plate alongside Turkey, chicken, or roast, smother in gravy, and call coronary care to reserve your bed in the ICU.

My wife's from Cape Breton, and their version of that is called 'Boiled Dinner'. Just the name is cringe-inducing.
It's basically the same thing: A pile a perfectly good vegetables boiled into mush with massive slices of the saltiest ham you've ever eaten.

It should be classified as a food crime.

Oh hell, the only difference between us and Cape Breton is that we have more stoplights and WalMarts :) And they speak more French than we do.

This started out way, way back in the day in the section of town that had the produce yards. Lots of workers that needed a quick lunch. This way they could have the whole meal on one sandwich. Over the years it's become a real favorite around here. It's actually really good, and I'm not a cole slaw fan. Many celebrities that come to Pittsburgh usually stop by Primanti's and get one.

5 years in Comox, BC. '81-'86.

Great Summers, mild Winters and the best beaches I've ever experienced (in Canada).

Sigh... I miss the water. Southern Ontario is a hell-hole.

Thought Kitchener was in the warm part of Ontario that has warm air masses coming up from the Gulf of Mexico.

We get the same weather as Northern Michigan. The lake effect snow and high winds off Huron are brutal.
Whether you think it's global warming or just plain cyclical weather patterns, we've had a few years of rotten rainy Summers and Winters that keep bouncing back and forth between just above freezing and -25 celcius.
