Best Blu-ray Examples

Postby Movie Mike » Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:40 pm

Just wondering what everybody thinks are the best looking Blu-ray movies out there. What has a picture quality that will knock your eyes out?
Basically this will be helpful for future Blu-ray buying excursions.

Some of My Favorites
The Dark Knight The Imax scenes alone are worth it.
Happy Feet The color is stunning
Dark City They know how to do dark.
2001 a Space Odyssey Seeing this on Blu-ray has finally got me to really appreciate this movie.
Dr. No For a film from the sixties it looks like it was shot last week.

So what are your favorites?

Wall-E is simply astonishing in hi-def. That's probably the best showcase disc I can think of right now.

Roger Ebert calls Baraka (1992) restored on Blu-ray "the finest video disc I have ever viewed or ever imagined," and said, "Baraka by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player."

Todd-AO 65mm in Blu-ray, yeah baby! This is one of the most beautiful films out there. I have it on SDVD but haven't d-dipped it to Blu-ray yet because of price. Usually in the $30-35 range in stores, I will probably end up getting it on Amazon for $21.49. And this along with The Dark Knight is the reason I'm getting a home theater speaker system next month.

Just finished Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2, and that one knocked my socks off. Gorgeous visuals and an amazing new sound mix.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut still reigns supreme though - STUNNING treatment for a landmark film.

Kung Fu Panda-The most dazzling animated Blu-ray out so far. Colors, detail, etc.-all reference quality. I was so taken with the visuals that I kept having to get myself back to the story. If you have a nice HDTV and want to show someone what hi-def is all about; put this disc in the player!
The Adventures of Robin Hood-Best example that a old classic can look stunning.

Personally "Wall-E" and "Spider-Man 3" have made me go 'WOW' the most when looking at the pretty pictures by PS3 Blu-ray can create. Guess which is the better of the two content-wise?

Planet Earth is a stunner in my collection. Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl is amazing whenever they show the scenes on open water. Kill Bill is a nice showcase disc as well.

Pretty much anything that Disney puts out is guaranteed to look fantastic. Even going back to their laserdisc days they always pulled out all the stops with their discs.

I'd love to get Planet Earth, it's only the hefty price tag that's slowing me down.

It's occasionally cheaper online, but I managed to get mine used for $49.99. With patience you'll find it at a reasonable price.

If you think Planet Earth is impressive, you really need to get Baraka. Planet Earth does look pretty good, but it pales in comparison.

Speed Racer is un-freakin-believable on Blu-Ray. The film certainly divides audiences (I personally loved it), but the quality of the visuals is beyond doubt. I'd say it is arguably the best looking movie on Blu-Ray.

I guess old classic is relative to one's age. I saw 2001 on it's original release but Robin Hood was way before my time so to me it's an old classic whereas 2001 is an old friend. 8)

Funny, because when I saw [b]2001[/i] in the theater in 1994, it was an original print all scratched to pieces and faded to pink. Awesome...
