Another Blu-Ray convert

Postby Parklife » Mon Jan 19, 2009 3:39 pm

I now have a Sony BDP-BX1 player.. My wife had a work 'auction' (they won auction money as an incentive then held an auction at one of their sales meetings) and picked up the player last Friday. I haven't paid any attention to much in the world of Blu-Ray simply because I didn't anticipate getting one for a while. I have conceded that I won't start double dipping and buying Blu-Ray discs of movies we already own.

Quick questions:

1. Are Blu-Ray players region free? Can I play other region DVDs on my Blu-Ray player?

2. I don't have an HDMI port on my television... is there a reliable converter to DVI or VGA? Or, since that would be converting to analog, am I better off just using the Component Video cables?

3. What the heck is BD Live and is it really a worthwhile function or just another bell/whistle I won't get much use out of?

1. Most are, some aren't, your mileage may vary.

2. You can convert HDMI to DVI with no issues and still get a 720p/1080i image. If your tv is a 1080p set, you may be out of luck, as while component is technically capable of carrying a 1080p signal, Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD) have it locked out on many discs.

3. That depends - it's usually a link to internet based content accessible only through the blu-ray player, and some of the stuff is pretty snazzy (Universal allows you to view trailers for example) and at least two discs (Hellboy II and The Dark Knight) have had live chats over BD Live with the directors that apparently went VERY well. You can also arrange for group screenings of films and basically log into a private "chat room" of sorts (i know keyboards via USB are supported, i've heard heard voice chat works as well). I think it would be considerably awesome to get a "Verdict screening" on the go using BD Live, a room of us chatting about a film whilst watching it together. If this sort of stuff turns you on, than you very well may make use of BD Live.

That's not only old news, it's also wrong. Porn is already on blu ray. It was thought at one time that Sony would block adult films, but they either lack the power or the desire to do so.

It is fascinating to think that porn supposedly killed BETA back in the days of the "tape format wars". You see that industry went with VHS, and insured it became the prominent preferred choice. But with BluRay seems Disney tipped the scales. The adult films went with HD DVD at first, and seemed some speculated that was why it would win. Oh, how wrong in hindsight. They underestimated the pull of SLEEPING BEAUTY and CINDERELLA on the high def world. But now the flesh flicks are following the house the mouse built. Strange days indeed.

Just speculation Brett but it sort of makes sense. VHS and Beta had to create a market for home movie. The adult industry just helped to get the commercial wheels rolling. It helped make the market for commercial equipment which led to product, both adult and standard, which then made VHS viable to the home consumer.

HD and BR were on different ends. Home video is set, people WILL have some form of home video, the question was which. Porn has a smaller market than mainstream movies so it's contribution was much smaller. In actuality Warner could have ended the war day one if they hadn't insisted on being format neutral. Disney just added to the already superior product line and tipped the scale that was already tettering in that direction anyway.

Of course this is all hindsight, but in all fairness also most of the people on this forum (myself included) were BR from day one because of the studios that aligned with each and the lackluster support from Microshaft that HD got.

It's funy how much credit Disney gets, when it was actually Warner who killed the format when they went BR exclusive - how short memories are.

What I find stunning is that we reached this many posts on a HD topic without J.M. Vargas lecturing us on how good HD DVD was...

Honestly, I went with the whole porn as well. I was really kind of surprised it didn't turn out that way.
