What's the oldest (purchase date) DVD title you own...

Postby J.M. Vargas » Fri Feb 27, 2009 5:03 pm

... that is still shrink-wrapped and has yet to be opened? I don't know yet (I'm at work right now; will report later) but this confession from another thread by Steve T. Power has got to be some kind of a record: http://www.dvdverdict.com/juryroom/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=2505&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=50#p33695

Forgot to mention the winner of last night's movie lotto:

The 13th Warrior - Actually one of my very first DVD purchases way back in the summer of 2000, and yet i haven't seen the flick since the VHS days (correct, it's been on my shelf, unwatched, for over 8 years!) I absolutely loved it. It's beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and progresses with just the right mix of action, drama, and suspense. Beautifully effective and fun as hell. This flick got the goddamn shaft! (wasn't it the most expensive Disney financed film ever at one point?). I'll put this right next to Conan the Barbarian when i'm in the mood for some medieval action any day of the week.

Wow... You're talking unopened? I can't imagine not even taking the plastic off a disc, even if I know I won't be watching it for a while.

For me, I guess it's about a year or so for a couple of Blu-ray titles that need my full attention...

I can't tell you the date but it was Mars Attacks when there still was the option of buying titles on DVD or Laserdisc! I had just gotten my first DVD player: a Sony DVP-S300 (which still works!). The date on the player is March '98 so I want to say sometime that same year.

Unopened, none. I open them when I get home to make sure the disc is okay. I've had a few issues with that.

Unwatched, Friday the 13th, from two Halloweens ago. It was on sale after Halloween back when Kmart used to mark them down rather than send them away.

I'm not sure anyone can top Steve's record.

My longest unwatched movie was Exorcist 3. I had it probably 4 years before watching it. It was in the 5.50 bin at Walmart back when the only other stuff in there was public domain garbage. It was actually there before it was a "bin" and they still had them on a shelf in the department. Recently they went back to the shelf system locally, but I'm babbling again.

OK, you guys are right. The DVD doesn't have to be shrink-wrapped (bonus points for nerdiness if they are  ) but definitely not watched to qualify.

A PS2 was my first DVD player so everything is post mid-2000. From an early look at my shelf I see "Jurassic Park/Lost World Pak," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," "Total Recall" (the red planet packaging), "Cleopatra: Fox Five Star Collection" (still shrink-wrapped), "Speed: Five Star Collection" (still shrink-wrapped), "Amadeus: Director's Cut" (still shrink-wrapped), "The Beatles Anthology," "The Ren & Stimpy Show: First and Second Seasons Uncut" (never even seen the damn 'toon), "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (still shrink-wrapped), "The Manchurian Candidate" (original, still shrink-wrapped), "Pulp Fiction/Jackie Brown/True Romance" (the last one still shrink-wrapped), etc. Release dates for these titles date as back as 2001 ("True Romance").

Wow! And that doesn't even include newer stuff still shrink-wrapped/unwatched: half my Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, all three seasons of "Veronica Mars" and "Arrested Development," "Bones S1 & S2," several early "Simpsons" seasons, "Joan of Arcadia S1 & S2," "Flintstones S1 & S2," etc.

Well, I have none still shrink-wrpped, but the three oldest titles I could find was Galaxy Quest: DTS, M*A*S*H: 5-Star Collection and the Big Trouble in Little China 2-disc set.

I picked up Spartan a week after I initially watched it (Really dug the movie). Yet it sit's on my shelf, still wrapped. It was purchased about 6 months after it was released. That's probably my record right now, though there are a few blu-rays and HD-DVDs on my shelf that haven't been cracked yet. I don't think there are any discs in the collection anymore that haven't EVER been seen outside of Pride and Glory, Body of Lies, and Appaloosa.

I don't have anything unwrapped because I ALWAYS unwrap each disc I buy to ensure that it has no defects. The oldest discs I own are the first DVDs that I bought back with my first DVD player back in July of 2000--Talking Heads' True Stories and Logan's Run. And, yes, I've watched them both. The oldest DVD I have that hasn't been watched is probably Heist, which I got from Columbia House years ago.

Later than practically everyone here I'll bet so I couldn't compete at ALL.

Hey in fact maybe I have some kind of record in that I do not own a single DVD I haven't watched.

The first DVD I ever bought was Marilyn Manson's Guns/God/Government tour DVD.

Actually, it was a Christmas gift from 2002.

The first DVD I actually purchased was the first season of The Simpsons.

The act of watching it in itself is a special occasion.

I think I might be able to top Steve's record with quite a few titles that are un-opened. A large majority of my DVD collection is like that... I personally find it a little annoying but I can't open it unless I'm going to watch it, that instant! The other unusual thing about my collection is the fact that many of the titles I own are "blind buys" and many, still, un-opened. My house is going through a renovation right now and 98% of my DVD collection is in the basement (along with my C.D.'S) all packed in boxes. As soon as I start organizing again I'll be happy to list the title I have had for years to come un-opened. Currently, three come to mind (I've seen them all and even own them on Laserdisc) those are all three "Scream" films... Speaking of laserdiscs, I have the same problem, a vast majority of my laseriscs are just that, un-opened. I still have yet to watch many of them (and am currently in the market for a replacement laserdisc player), if you think I'm bad, my dad has a collection of VHS tapes that he hasn't even touched... Unopened box-sets. Many of which I bought him for Christmas, jaws would drop if you saw what's unopened in my house!
It's not as though I really need you, if you were here I'd only bleed you..

Got my DVD player in mid 2001, and after my first few purchases of good stuff, I started going for quantity over quality (bad idea) and I have a pair of PD cheapie horror flicks from somewhere around late 2002 that I've yet to open and watch. They were unearthed over Christmas. Realizing how utterly crappy they're likely to be, I'm not sure if I'll ever watch them......

Deep Blue Sea has many shots of Thomas Jane's muscular, fuzzy chest. Any movie with shirtless Thomas Jane is by definition A Good Movie.

This also applies to Jason Statham.

I'm not a weirdo - every single DVD I've ever bought has been opened. Why would someone buy a DVD and keep it in the shrink-wrap? To look at it? Who has the money to afford to buy a video, just to look at it? And why would someone buy a video with no intention of watching it?

I never understood that. I mean I own over 100 that I haven't watched yet, but they're all opened and sorted into the collection at least. I want my DVD shelf to look good, and it won't if I have a stack of unwatched in the room. Or if I sorted them in but kept them wrapped, I'd be bugged if I saw the wrap shimmering.

If anything, unwrapping is annoying to do, and I'd rather not do that when I want to finally watch the movie.
