Anyone playing Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars

Postby mkiker2089 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:46 pm

Just curious. I'm tempted to pick this one up, but I've never played a GTA game before, or anything like it as far as I know. Lately I've played all the Castlevania games, Peggle, New Super Mario, card games, etc like that.

I also kind of hate to buy "hot" games. I know games are hot for a reason but I also know that there are, or must be, many great games that have less advertising and get less attention because of it.

The GTA series has moved beyond "hot" fad and into the upper echelons of gaming goodness. The series from GTA III on is a workshop on brilliant game design. That said, Chinatown Wars is a bit of a throwback to the older GTA games on the PC and PSOne, so it may not hold the same broad appeal of the later games, but even those were pretty fun in a "mindless mischief" sort of way. That's probably the best way to handle a portable version.

My advice would be to track down the GTA Trilogy for original xbox if you own an Xbox360 - that way you can get in on the ground floor as it were and play them upscaled (with a little extra visual flair). They look a little dated now, but the games are immense time sinks and the gameplay is really something that doesn't get old. Or you could dive right in with Grand Theft Auto 4, which is everything that worked in the PS2/Xbox era with all of the modern panache that comes with the current crop of AAA stuff. And in spite of some of the recent "Video game nerd backlash" that hits the real blockbuster games, it's just an amazing title.

I don't own a console at all and my PC won't do games even if I let it.

Still on the fence. I may just wait for Ghostbusters. My game budget is sparse.

It honestly didn't strike me as being worth my time or effort.

I'll probably wind up trying it though.
