on the subject of updates

Okay let's talk. Gameinformer recently posted a letter telling a writer that he was an idiot and that game updates are good. Now they've reversed course and published and editorial saying that updates are time consuming and result from sloppy design.

I've read on the forums where people complain about system updates also. The PS3 rolled over some time late last night. They say the updates are too often and usually over things that aren't worth bothering the users with.

I personally think that game updates are good and should include free DLC to help games recover shelf life. Right now games are at a critical point in that if they don't sell in a few weeks they become land fill fodder. The publishers are having a harder time recouping costs with this scheme so something has got to give.

I also think system updates show that a company is working on the system and not merely sitting back with your money.

System updates are a boon, it shows that the people who built your machine give a rat's ass about their product. Additional features are always welcome, except when they're something like making cutesy avatars and having it be mandatory.

Game Updates are another matter, and while i'm not as supportive of those as i am of system updates, i still think they're more of a good than an evil.

What's the difference? I don't own a 360 so I don't know what it's got, except the cutesey avatar system stolen from Nintendo. I've seen that.
