Doctor Who: First Photos of the Cast

Postby HGervais » Mon Jul 20, 2009 9:39 am

Shooting has just started for series 5 with new Doctor Matt Smith and the British press is all over it. First set of photos. For the Doctor, it sure feels like retro all the way and boy but Karen Gillan is stunning. The second set of photos has what may be considered a pretty big guest star spoiler for some but a hardly surprising one. And a third set of photos from Relative Demensions with the last picture including that spoiler shot.
I like the retro look. I like the shout-out with the bow tie to Patrick Troughton's Doctor. I saw one comment that compared Smith's look to a 1940s teacher, not unlike what Indiana Jones looked like when he was doing his teaching gig.
Right around now I want to see a list of who is writing what episodes. How many Gatiss ones will we get? Is Neil Gaimen actually writing an episode? How many episodes will SM actually be writing? So there you go. I'm pumped for the future. 2010 cannot come soon enough.

I'm impressed. I like his look, but what's with the crazy hair? As if David's wasn't wacky enough. The new companion is HOT!
Wonder what the interior of the TARDIS will look like. Never liked the coral look.

From what I have read the TARDIS is getting a retro look as well. Very blue & white from the reports I have come across. And did you notice the TARDIS exterior also got a little make over? And yeah, Scottish redheads do kind of = blazing hot, don't they? Only 9 months & change to go.

Harold Lloyd is good but the name I keep thinking of is Bernard Quatermass. Which, again if we are to listen to Moffat, is a name that keeps coming up on his thinking as well.

Certainly fits with all the information making its way out there. The TARDIS is supposed to look so new because it is the Hartnell TARDIS. I really, REALLY want to know what kind of re-set button RTD and SM are putting into play.

Well, given the rumour how Tennat's final ends, there is a very, very good reason Doctor Eleven will have a new, shiny TARDIS...

As a side note I was speaking with my 11 year old niece today and I told her David Tennant was leaving the show and Matt Smith was coming on board. After explaining to her the concept of regeneration I asked her if she wanted to see some pictures of the new Doctor. So I did and her reply? New guy is kind of dorky & ugly. Oh and she mentioned the hair as in what's up with that?

I'd like to start watching this show, I've been thinking of picking up the seasons on DVD. However, do I need to have seen all the older series as well? I have nothing against that, its just alot of material, if I could start with the 2005 series and enjoy it just as much I will. Any thoughts?

You can confidently dive in with no previous WHO experience needed. Granted, there are references and in-jokes peppered throughout the series, but in no way will that diminish your appreciation for the show.

No need to start with the old show: I certainly did not. However, you will soon find yourself desiring to watch the old show, as I have done, and become a full Doctor Who addict :D

If you do decide to check out the old series as well, some episodes that will add to the new series expirence include:

GENESIS OF THE DALEKS
SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE (you will see traces of this in the first episode of the new series)
REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS
THE KEEPER OF TRAKEN
LOGOPOLIS
CASTROVALVA (Last three make up a trilogy available in a box set)
THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI
TRIAL OF A TIME LORD (Ok, not the greatest moment of the show, but I still dig it)

I have got to say that the more I have watched of Colin Baker the more I like what he was trying to do with the character. I can even almost forgive the jacket.

With another producer and Script Editor at the helm, as well as different BBC management that were not bent on killing the show, Colin would probably have ended up as one of the greatest Doctor's there ever was. I can't imagine any other actor managing to maintain dignity while wearing that costume as much as Colin did.

I started with Eccleston and got hooked bigtime. We just started the spinoff Torchwood too, which is darker but pretty good so far.
+1. this is very interesting.

I'm crossing my fingers that the new series is a huge improvement over Series 4. I absolutely adored S1-3 but felt S4 just started to unravel at the seams, midway through and ended with a cheap, uninspired cop-out. I haven't bothered to rewatch it on DVD or even check out the Tennant specials that have sporadically been aired.

That's funny as I thought it was one of the new series strongest efforts simply because of Catherine Tate. The series weaker episodes don't seem as off as the weaker installments from previous series with the big exception being the final episode which does indeed go off the rails. I just don't think RTD knows how to wrap things up. I hate hate hate what they did to Donna Noble and I think I would have felt better if they had just killed off her character because the way they left just seemed cruel. I hope her situation is something that is addressed in the final couple of Tennant episodes but yeah that finale was enough to leave a bad taste in the mouth. That said, Doctor Who does not get much better than the episodes "Twilight" or "Turn Left." As for the two specials aired thus far, The Next Doctor is a low-keyish affair with a really powerful ending from Tennant and Planet of the Dead is a lark with not a thought in its head other than to entertain. It's fun. And Michelle Ryan is super hot. I just watched Tennant's appearances on The Sarah Jane Adventures and it was a nice to see them say goodbye to each other. Next stop is "The Water of Mars" is due to be transmitted in the UK on Sunday Nov. 15 and the final two episodes on Christmas & New Year's Day respectively. We might even get Moffatt's series 5 a little earlier than the usual spring window.

i am also a huge Catherine Tate fan..technically i would call that casting as much or a coup as casing billie piper.
Tate is a popular comedian in her own right..pairing her with Tennant was hysterical - it completely reversed the show's "EVERY damn woman who travels with the Dr falls in love with him scenario"...which i was rather sick of. I don't think Martha Jones worked out as well as she was supposed to...she was introduced as a strong character who was a Dr in her own right and then she devolved into a Doctor groupie..it took the entire season for her to find her balls - and then she was written out.

I really liked Tennant to the point where i may want to check out of the series and just keep those 3 seasons close to my heart as MY Doctor.

I understand what you are saying but really one of the biggest things with Doctor Who is the ability of the show to renew itself with the arrival of a new Doctor. And trust me, based on what I have seen of Matt Smith in other stuff, I think he is going to be a great Doctor. I'm going to miss Tennant as well but part of the fun of the show is a new Doctor.

And in news that will be of interest to both Doctor Who and comic book fans, Neil Gaiman has confirmed that he is writing an episode for the next series of Doctor Who.
