Back to the gun control thing, and all the rules about having a pistol. What about hunting? If the laws only want you
to carry the gun from your home to the gun club..how can you go hunting?

One rarely hunts with a .45 up here, and rifles are a different matter.

I think it varies by province, but they are strictly regulated with regards to barrel length, rate of fire and cartridge capacity. Here in Newfoundtown, any "sport legal" weapon may be carried in a designated area zoned for hunting and with a permit for that particular region, and with a valid Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC). Each weapon you own must also be registered with local law enforcement.

Funny story, before the registration law was implemented i had six rifles myself, all of which were destroyed rather than pay the 150 bucks each to register them.

Also, somewhat hypocritical of me considering my stance on handguns and restricted weapons, one of them was a 16-gauge breach loader with the barrel sawed to about ten inches and the stock sawed completely. It was only fired twice, in the woodlands behind my cabin. Stupid teenage thing.

I have both my non-restricted (rifles, shotguns, crossbows) and restricted (handguns) licence, or 'PAL'. To get your non-restricted you have to take a gun safety course which runs anywhere from a few hours to a whole weekend, depending on whether or not it's a hunting-focused course.

You then take and presumably pass the government test. Mail in the paperwork and a fist full of cash and you eventually get your PAL. In order to buy a rifle, you must go through a waiting period. And to transport and store a long gun there are certain rules regarding trigger locks, cases and separation of ammunition.

One I would recommend is Davinci's Inquest. Much more somber and realistic than CSI. Predates them too.

Of course there's Due South, but that's a little obvious. :)

Don't forget Corner Gas. It's a Brilliant comedy.

you should have warned me about Corner Gas you know...
now i have Sunkist Orange spewed all over the TV screen.

this dvd should come with a warning label.

The timing.....just back from my local coin shop, I got a Loony and a Toonie. (I am a coin and money collector, but those are so common
they hardly ever show up in a vintage coin shop. I have a $2 (Canadian) from 1954 and a $10 that has a misprint, it is worth $20 US)

I know $1 and $2 bills were abandoned years ago, but what if you found one in an old jacket lets say. Can you still spend it?
Loonies are so very very light! It feels like tin. Am I the only one that thinks this?
As you probably know, US money goes like this: coins, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 then (obsolete) $500, $1,000 $5,000 $100,000

How about Canadian money?

(Stubbs looks into his pockets...)

well, we've got all your standard change: 1, 5, 10 and 25-cent pieces. Every year there are 50-cent pieces minted, but they don't go into regular circulation anymore.

The ubiquitous looney and toonie... Although I never noticed that the loonie feels lighter than any other coin.

And then 5, 10, 20, 50 AND 100s. I saw a thousand-dollar bill just once in my life. It's been phased out.

Paper ones and twos are still legal tender, as well as all the different variations and styles of bills that we've seen in the last 30 years or so.

Loonies are actually kinda heavy as far as coins go. Toonies are pretty light (and cool looking!)

I love having a pocketful of Toonies, cause that means lots of extra large triple triples from Tim Horton's for Steve!

I also still have a few older bills floating around (the 70's era 2-dollar bill and the "last going off" 2-bill from the late 80's).

Our "current" bills look like something out of a science fiction film, which is kinda cool i guess.

At what point did Canadian money become standard? In the US this happened only after 100 years of pretty much chaos.
Banks would issue money, which was worthless as far as another bank was concerned. This led to several problems,
counterfieting was a huge problem. After the US Civil war (1860-1865) This problem was fixed. US money was issued by the
Government and a $1 was a $1 anywhere. Before this, a guy in Boston would not be able to spend his Boston bank issue money
in Florida, since they could give a flip if some Boston bank claimed his paper was money, and even so, how did they know if it
was even real?
When did you guys come to a money "standard"?

Aw, jeez... The history of Candian money is kinda complicated...

I guess you could say that we were pretty uniform for the most part. Our cash was made in the U.S.A. and looked very similar to yours until 1908 when we started making our own.

More importantly: Corner Gas. If you know your way around torrents, that's the best way to check it out if you live outside of Canada.

One of the many things I love about that show is that it's one of the only places you can see a Native Indian actor (in this case the wonderful Lorne Cardinal) be allowed to play a goofy regular guy, instead of the well-meaning stereotype wiseman sage character.

My home state of California is handing out IOUs to its workers. This is due to the fact that the Legislature (Bozos) and the Governor You know who he is:
(The Terminator Himself) are past the deadline for reaching a budget. They have failed to do this, and thus....the states money is being sat on, since there
is no budget in place deciding where it goes. Workers are being paid with IOUs, and most banks have now begun to refuse to cash them as checks as they had
been before. This has happened before, and will happen again.
The issue is this: Arnold wants to balance the budget, but he refuses to raise Taxes at all. He thinks he should be cheered for this. Perhaps he should be. After all,
the man has been quite creative in coming up with ways the state could save money, rather than collect new money. He has jacked up fees on college kids, tried to
squeeze money out of Indian casinos, cut and in some cases eliminated services for the poorest of the poor, the disabled, and the elderly. He wants to close some
prisons and let those freaks back out on the streets....BEFORE they have paid thier debt to the state.
The point is this: Has a Canadian area, local, provincial, Federal (or is it Royal?) ever gotten to the point of giving out IOUs?

umm... I realize this is "Ask a Canadian" and all but I must ask, are you serious? He raised taxes to the tune of $12 billion dollars earlier this year... even more tax increases were turned down at the ballot box... he's taken a middle approach cutting benefits and raising taxes (hence why he's not particularly popular with either party right now). We now have the highest income tax rates in the country as well as the highest sales tax rates in the country (or at least as of earlier this year, perhaps some other state has jumped ahead in the last 4 months). In May, your car registration fees increased roughly 45% at the behest of Schwarzenegger... If anything the guy's far too pragmatic for a life in politics. And state money is not being sat on... it's just not there period.

But, coming back to "Ask a Canadian".... Is Don Cherry really a homosexual or does he just dress flamboyantly? I really can't tell.

He's a snappy dresser is all. Always a dedicated husband to his wife Rose (he wore a rose on his lapels for years as tribute to her), who sadly passed with Cancer in 1997.

While he may have a bad rep for his Hockey Night in Canada antics, he's one of the most generous and caring personalities in the country.

Parklife,

If you have not been following the budget stand off, and it would seem you have not, then the break down I gave would in fact lead to the confusion you have.
Of course he has raised taxes and other fees. Which I did mention. He is not willing to do so for the sake of the current budget face off.

ID cards. In the US, we have a driver license, or a state issue ID card. They look the same, but one says ID card, the other says license.
There have been a few trys at getting a national ID card (hell no) going down here.
Some states you get your Driver license at the DMV office. Others mail it to you roughly a week later.
How long does it take to get your passports? In the US we just started getting the "passport card" it is the same size as a DL,
but it serves as a limited ability passport. Only good for land travel going to Canada, Mexico. Sea travel to the carribean. That is all.
To go anyplace else, or to fly out of the country, you need the traditional "passport book"

What about you guys? Can you get the non DL ID card? Do you have a national ID card? How long does it take you to get a passport?
Does your DMV print your license on the spot, or mail it to you?

How about......What about speed limits? What is the typical speed limit you have?
Congress dropped the 55 MPH ban 2 years ago, it is now up to each state to determine what it wants.

On the highways it's usually 100 km/h, though no one follows it. Most people drive at least 120 around where I am, if not a bit faster.

In town, it's normally 60 km/h

Some of the highways in Nova Scotia have a posted limit of 110 km/h. For you Americans, that's about 68 mph. The cross-Canada average is 100 km/h for the big highways.

It's not that big of a deal here. Several reasons: we don't need to bitch about something nearly as much as you guys, our change over date is still two years away, the penetration of cable/satellite is way higher than the States and overall, there's crap on the TV anyway. Most won't miss it if it disappeared.

Am I right that most of the world has adopted the 16*9 format? Where did that start anyway, I vaguely recall that it was in Japan but I could be wrong.

Not all Canadian TV can be crap. Is it just that more of it is on cable? Is that due to geographic reasons?

I was pulled over a few weeks ago for doing 89 kph in a 50 kph zone. It was totally ignorance on my part. I thought it was an 80 zone. I would have gotten a ticket for $160.00 plus 2 points off my license (you get 5 total. Lose 3 (I think) and you're in big doo-doo).

I was honest and friendly with the cop and I have a spotless record, so he dropped it down to 15 km over the limit, making my fine just 50 bucks with no points lost.

Hmm... I've never even heard of this series. Paul Gross is quickly becoming a Canadian auteur of sorts.

Glad to see that you're so thoroughly interested in our filmed entertainment, Molly. There is a lot of mediocre Canadian entertainment, but there are also some real gems if you look hard enough.

We have an untapped treasure trove of music that never gets play in the U.S., as well. I could list a dozen top-notch national and regional favourites that are viturally unknown in the U.S. Even stadium-fillers like The Tragically Hip often just play half-full little clubs once they cross the border.

They run Da Vinci's inquest down here infrequently, but i haven't seen them all yet. I look forward to it.

What else can you offer me??

One series absolutly worth checking out is MADE IN CANADA which aired in the US as THE INDUSTRY. It came out long before most of the Hollywood behind the scenes series and addresses the complexities of working in the Canadian film and television industry. Folks like Kieffer Sutherland show up from time to time to boot and it ran for about five years. Highly worth checking out, especially for dialogue like the following:

"Ok, now to secure investors, one of us is going to have to take the smaller fee upfront and give up the percentage of box office gross on the backend."

"Which of us will do that?"

"I'll take the upfront money, and you can have the back end."

"Deal. " (pauses to think) "Wait, if the backend is such a great money maker, why were you so willing to give it up?"

"Since when does a Canadian movie make any money at the Box Office?"

"Made in Canada" was daily watching for me for a while. Rick Mercer is a Newfoundland homeboy though, his weekly "news" show on CBC (The Mercer Report)is fantastic as well.

He's one of the best political satirists in the game. Smart and razor sharp. Class act to boot.
As the ancient Tibetan philosophy states:"Don't start none... won't be none...".

Agreed one hundred percent. The man blows the likes of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert out of the water. I was crushed when he left This Hour has 22 Minutes, and then I gave up on the show once Greg Thomey left and Mary Walsh gave up on comedy for that awful wannabe intellectual book club program. Actually, where the heck is Thomey these days?

Mercer's gotten lazy. The jokes on his show are terrible, and he's clearly uncomfortable with the hosted format. It's no longer about satire. It's about him going to small towns and doing craaaaaazy things while making obvious jabs at party leaders. And shitty photoshop contests. The rants are still good, but that adds up to a whole two minutes out of every episode.

22 Minutes, on the other hand, has managed to rebuild itself into an fairly funny show, barring Shaun Majumder's contributions. Mark Critch, Gavin Crawford and Geri Hall are all doing solid work, and Cathy Jones is decent enough.

Biggest Export? And to where do you guys send it?
Biggest Import? And from where does it come into Canada?
