New Slimmer, Cheaper, Less Power Hungry, etc. PS3 Announced

Postby hoytereden » Tue Aug 18, 2009 6:35 pm

Over at Hi Def Digest is the news about the new and improved PS3 coming shortly to our shores. Perhaps someone more computer literate than me could post the article here. Sounds interesting.

It's here. Sounds good to me. I'm curious to read a full review.

Like the specs - mostly - but don't like the new look.

Given how much cheaper it is over the original PS3, me thinks I am going to go this route when buying. Anybody have an idea what the Canadian price will amount to?

I'm indifferent really. I don't think the redesign was necessary, but the price sure is nice.

I may pick up a second unit for the wife for Christmas.

Ghost:

Canadian pricing is as follows:

80GB/Slim model - $299.99
160GB model - $399.99

The slim will fall under the 299.99 pricing, though it has a 120GB internal drive.

Thanks Steve. Since I cannot purchase one till Sept, I'm really starting to think the slim is the way to go, unless there turns out to be a series of massive flaws after launch *cough*Xbox360*cough.

The 360 has a 56 percent failure rate, the ps3 is closer to 8 I think. I don't expect problems.

I wonder what's going to hpaan to the 160 gig version, and the 80 gig. I imagine the 80 is now dead, what about the 160. A hundred dollars for an older game and a few gigs is high, so is it going?

Beyond that the changes to the slim are supposed to be transparent. It should be functionally the same as the 80/160 versions out now.

Word on the web is that there's going to be a 250 GB version of the Slim released at some point. I'd say they're just clearing out old 80/160 GB stock at this point.

I think this is exactly what Sony needed to do. Funny enough, my gut says that a price drop without a rebranded relaunch wouldn't have struck the same chord with everyone. We all knew this was coming, but it's still pretty exciting. That says a lot. Perhaps even more telling is that since Microsoft is getting rid of their 60 GB console and moving the 120 GB Elite into the $299 price point, the 360 and PS3 are essentially going head-to-head for the first time. Sure, there's the hard drive-less Arcade, but you pretty much need a hard drive to do anything on the 360, so it doesn't count. I think for a lot of people who've stayed on the fence thus far, the PS3—with its free online service, built-in wi-fi and Blu-ray, and waaaaay lower failure rate—will look like a much better deal than the 360.

Any guesses on the likelyhood this sucker will sell out day one? May have to place a pre-order now just in case...

I'd say it's a given.

You could just get the 80 gig now for the same price, but it's 40 gigs short of HD space. Are there any incentives to get the 80? Maybe check local stores and see what they think. Software is the same and all.

That is true. I have to hold off till Sept 1 for a few reasons anyway (most involving a pain in the ____ sibling that isn't my brother), but my one concern is the ability of the older PS3 model being able to fit into the wall unit. I think it would probably fit, but I just need to make sure that it will.

Just called the local Futureshop around here, and this is what I was told:

-PS3 slim has been shipped already.

-Will be allowed to sell as soon as it is in, which may even be this Monday.

-Cannot reserve in store.

Not sure how this will go for those in America, but I assume that other stores will probably start selling ASAP as well.
