WATCHMEN ULTIMATE CUT today - anybody biting?

Postby BrettCullum » Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:14 am

Interesting review of this today by Judge Clark Douglas.
Tough to justify adding anything in to the film when it was already too long in its theatrical incarnation... but on a home format I seem to be more forgiving. I did not buy the director's cut DVD... holding out for this edition instead. I figure... why the heck not? I bought it just to have the complete set. Seemed the one to buy for me despite Clark's warnings. I want as much material as I can get with the bells and whistles, so it seems this is the one to purchase for my collection.

Anybody else buying this one?

I would have been a lot more forgiving of this version if the set offered the option to watch the director's cut and/or theatrical cut. The Tales of the Black Freighter sequences really mess up the flow of the film, so I'd much rather watch one of the other versions. Yeah, this set has more content overall than the others, but with an inferior version of the film being the only viewing option I just don't think its worth it.

But now I'm just repeating my review, so I'll shut up. :)

It's a strong argument as well as a valid one.

With as many discs as comes with this set I can see how anybody would be miffed that they did not provide all the cuts. But in a way that seems to be a favor to those who bought the original release... they are not getting a duplicate that makes their DVD obsolete.

When I went back and reread THE WATCHMEN I largely skipped over THE BLACK FREIGHTER stuff. It does do a number on the flow of the story even in printed form... although it was often at the end of an issue. I think when I was reading it originally I just saw it as bonus material. But I know many fanboys who argue against that angle. :-)

I like the Black Freighter stuff in the comic, but it's a highly literary conceit. I'm not surprised by Clark's assessment that it doesn't work all that well in the movie. I'll give the Ultimate Cut a rent, but I'm sticking with the Director's Cut BD as the one to own -- I can almost guarantee that'll be the version I want to return to for repeat viewings.

I'm with Danno. Gonna stick with the director's cut on Blu-ray, which is really a vastly superior cut to the theatrical version. I've toyed with the idea of grabbing the Black Frieghter on Blu-ray as a companion piece, and it can be had pretty cheap - so i'll probably go that route - then again, i'm a sucker for documentaries, and isn't there a new one on the ultimate cut that's pretty extensive?

I rented the DC a couple of months ago and held out for this "Ultimate" set, Mistake?

Nope, no new documentary, just the motion comic and some extras ported over from the Tales of the Black Freighter disc. This does seem to be the sort of movie that's crying out for some comprehensive 3-hour documentary, though.

i guess i'm back to the director's cut
i was hoping there would be more 'text' that would justify the extended length.
sometimes the added material make the films more like a mini series..ala LOTR
but not in this case.

I'm sticking with the Director's Cut.

But then again, I don't think the movie is all that good, either.

Yes. Went to Best Buy today and they wanted 49.99 for the Blu-ray (they didn't even have it in the weekly ad). So I ordered it from Amazon when I got home since it was 39.99, no tax and free shipping.

I'm perfectly happy with the DC and I'm thinking the animated sequences would be more distracting than beneficial so add another no to the list. If they had offered both cuts plus some sort of rebate for owners of the regular and DC editions then maybe.....

That's $10.00 more than I payed for it on amazon. It must have jumped up right after street date.

Amazon doesn't even have it. just a "not in stock - will ship when available" notice.

Far from the first time Warner has delayed a catalog release in Canada. Probably pop up in a few weeks.

Yeah, it was 39.49. So you got the Blu-ray of this on pre-order for 29.99? Wow. Wonder if it was a mistake. The standard is 28.99.

The main draw I see for this set is the Snyder commentary and Dave Gibbons commentary.

They also have tales from the Black Freighter on blu-ray at my local Blockbuster for less than 15 bucks. I'll definitely just snag that.

I'm not a huge fan but I will stick with the Director's Cut based on Clark's review.
