Postby the5thghostbuster » Fri Dec 25, 2009 12:10 pm

Hey folks, its Christmas now, and with gift giving going about, this seemed like a good idea for a seperate thread.

So what did you recieve for the holiday? Myself:

From my parents: Herzog/Kinski box set from Anchor Bay
Brother: Doctor Who: Key to Time Special Edition box
Sister: a book, Alien Zone II and the Warner Brothers Gangster Film Collection Vol. 3. It is a collection of academic articles on science fiction cinema
Girlfriend: A self made scarf :) Warm and fuzzy!

Hey there,

Well no DVDs, but my wife decided it was time for me to jump into the Blu so I got a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Was hoping we'd wait until we get an HDTV bigger than what we have (32"), but what the hell.

Hmm, still got some gift money to spend. Time to get that copy of Star Trek Blu-Ray I've been putting off.

I had a Blue Christmas this year.
Blu-Ray Christmas that is!
Here's what I now own:
Lost: Season 5 The Dharma Initiative Limited Box Set (very sweet)
Inglorious Basterds
The Hangover
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter Years 1 & 2 sets
District 9

I also received an Insignia 5.1 surround sound receiver with Dolby True HD and a HDMI cable for it.
This will replace my old receiver that didn't have true HD and now I will be able to listen to my Blu-rays in surround.
Haven't hooked it up yet, but I will tomorrow.

I really noticed the Blus during the boxing day sales. They've really been pushed with great prices. I wonder if this is a harbinger of things to come. If those sorts of prices stick then dvd's won't last long.

Looking through the local Boxing Day flyers is a real eye opener. Blu-Rays getting 2-page full spreads while DVD's get a half page. Individual Blu-Ray titles being advertised while DVD's get a generic "Titles starting at 3.99" ad.

My sister got me Watchmen: Ultimate Cut. I'm surprised to say that, while I get where Clark was coming from in his review and even agree with his assessment on paper, I absolutely dig this version of the film. It would make a godawful theatrical cut in that it would cause bladders to explode and asses to petrify, but as a home theater version I loved it. It's stately, elegant, and even more epic that the previous two cuts. Beyond the Black Freighter animated material, I just dug the small additions to scenes, the inclusion of the Bernards, and more of Rorschach in his nutjob, uncostumed glory. I was skeptical going in, but it really worked for me. I won't be giving up my Director's Cut as that'll still be the version of the movie I spin most often, but given a long afternoon with nothing to do (or even a couple of evenings), I can definitely see myself revisiting the Ultimate Cut every now and again.

I got as many gift cards as discs.

The relatives got me Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Runnin Down a Dream 4 Disc Set (3 DVDs & 1 CD) & Star Trek Blu Ray.
I got gift cards to Best Buy, Target, & (hold your breath), Blockbuster(Hey, somebody has to support them).

On Saturday, when I was at Best Buy to get District 9, I noticed that the Blu Ray was $19.99 while the "Special Edition" 2 disc DVD was $24.99. Guess which one I bought with the gift card?

I didn't get tons of DVDs, because... well... 1) people are afraid to buy them for me due to the massive collection and 2) I got a BluRay player for myself this Christmas.

On BluRay I bought:
1) The Dark Knight
2) Quantum of Solace
3) Watchmen - Director's Cut

On DVD I was gifted:
1) TRUE BLOOD - Season 1 which I have been holding off watching until I read the book.
2) THE BAD SEED - just fun!
3) DEXTER - Season 1 which I am not sure why I held off on other than time

My big gift this year was the Kindle, so I am going old school and vowing to read more this year.

I think the only reason why my friend got me this for my birthday was the fact he found it in Half Price books for a dollar and thought it was kind of cool for a buck.
I may re-gift it to another friend of mine who is a big "Happy Days" fan.

Amazon has it for 126.49 free shipping
Amazon sellers have it listed as new for 74.19, 74.38, 74.97 and up all with 2.98 shipping (one of the sellers that has it for 74.38 is named Deep_Discount_DVD_CD from IL. Hmmmm...)

Personally, i 'm a huge fan of the film. Kasdan's direction is spot on, Costner does well with the role, and Dennis Quaid gives a career highlight performance as Doc Holiday. It's definitely the yin to Tombstone's yang, a more realistic western biopic, less an action movie.

I've actually never seen Wyatt Earp... is it worth a look? I've heard a lot of mixed opinions over the years.

Cool. I may give it a look, considering that the Blu-ray is pretty cheap...

Yeah, my local Wal Mart stocks it for $15 CDN, which is like... 14.83 US :)

Just curious-Does the Blu-ray have the the 190 min. or the 210 min. version?

190 min. version - basically a port of the Warner 2-disc. I had no idea there was a longer cut.

Yeah, Warner issued the 212 minute version as a 2 VHS letterbox release in 1995. I got it for Christmas that year. I haven't seen the shorter version since 1994 and my memory isn't the greatest in regards to exactly what was added, but I do remember a few. Added a scene where Wyatt and Doc are jailed after the gunfight in Tombstone. The wedding scene was extended, more scenes with Wyatt and the Mastersons, and more stuff with young Wyatt.

I know the longer cut was also issued on laserdisc and I was hoping that with Blu-ray's bigger storage space that maybe both would be there. Too bad.

Wyatt Earp was my very first letterbox VHS.

I was hoping for the same in regards to the Blu-ray release. I don't have Blu-ray right now, but I figured I would eventually get it and hold on to it for later. I may be in the minority, but I think the 212 minute cut is even better than the 190 min version. I loved the 190 minute version when it first came out, but the longer cut blew me away.

One of the few pet peeves I have about the format is the fact that with that extra storage capacity it is not fully utilized in instances like this. Both versions would easily fit on one disc. Just a gripe but I think a valid one. :?

Yes, it is a valid point. Blu-Ray would be an ideal format to package together multiple cuts of a film. And just imagine the wrestling DVD compilations one could get on the format..
