Didn't DIVX players need to phone home to function? I suppose you could make a profit if you sold the discs as coasters for $2 each.

Divx did seem to use DRM so it's possible that someone may be able to break that DRM.

I thought DivX was the one that physically decayed. What were those? I know Staples tried to bring them back 6 months ago but I don't think it took off this time either.

The DIVX player had to authorize the disc via modem, I believe. Since the authorization servers no longer exist, there would be no way to play these discs back, unless someone figured out a hack. I believe the discs that you're referring to functioned as standard DVDs until a chemical reaction rendered them useless. It's the same basic idea as DIVX, but those you could actually watch once, unlike the thousand DIVX discs this guy is selling. Thankfully, both of these schemes failed. Unfortunately for this guy, I don't see his auction selling anytime soon.

DivX is a codec. DIVX was a rental system. It's pretty safe to assume that the auction is for DivX discs, which you'd most likely watch on a computer, though some DVD players are capable of handling the codec. It's extremely unlikely the dude is selling a thousand old DIVX discs.

Those are the real deal - old school Circuit City DIVX discs. I talked him down to 900 and i just bought em all - what a deal!

I think it was around 2006 before he stopped putting frowning emoticons after his DVD listings in the What Did You Buy? threads. He was traumatized by the death of his beloved DIVX format.

Probably. It was for the disposable market and somehow cheap and foolscreen always went together.

I did some googling and it seems that the DRM was broken, but I think you'd have to be a computer scientist to implement it. I guess the general rule of thumb is any security a few years old has been broken.
