The DIVX player had to authorize the disc via modem, I believe. Since the authorization servers no longer exist, there would be no way to play these discs back, unless someone figured out a hack. I believe the discs that you're referring to functioned as standard DVDs until a chemical reaction rendered them useless. It's the same basic idea as DIVX, but those you could actually watch once, unlike the thousand DIVX discs this guy is selling. Thankfully, both of these schemes failed. Unfortunately for this guy, I don't see his auction selling anytime soon.
