Rome was an enjoyable piece of light entertainment. It had no pretensions to rivalling I, Claudius in acting, writing or characterisation, and it sometimes fell prey to the temptation to include some quite graphic and gratuitous sex to titillate the audience, but it aimed to entertain in an intellectually undemanding fashion and it succeeded - which in a strange way mirrors the uncomplicated attitude to life for many Romans of a certain class in the Augustan age!
