How does this get greenlit? It was a fake trailer in a film that bombed spectacularly over Easter weekend. Nobody but us even bothered to notice GRINDHOUSE... WTF?

If you read the Variety blurb the above link links to it says Rodriguez is doing the film as an indie production (his first since his breakthrough "El Mariachi") and that it starts shooting this week. Guess Rodriguez got his cast to work for scale.

So, Rodriguez is no longer in business with the Weinstein Bros. but Quentin is.

That and (a) the Weinsteins are pressed-for-cash now since their latest Oscar bait (the musical "Nine") flopped at the Golden Globes (and is likely to get nothing come Oscar time), (b) Tarantino's "Inglorious Basterds" made money and has critical buzz (proving, at least in the Weinstein bros' minds, that Tarantino is a safer bet for the future) or (c) they're nuts. Regardless, there's another "Spy Kids" movies coming from Rodriguez under TWC later this year and that will mark the official last project between the two camps.

And the new footage doesn't match the Grindhouse footage's style one iota. I mean, watching the original trailer, I could imagine Machete being many things. A flick starring Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez was not one of them.
