For you US readers, WB has a neat promo, trade your DVD for BR's. Each is either the disc plus $4.95 or $6.95. I have no idea why the difference. Over $35 and it's free shipping.

I wish it was available in Canada.

HMV has got a mad crazy blu-ray selection, and as of late their prices have actually been pretty amazing (cheaper than Wal-mart in many cases).

I had forgotten that i had preordered Doc Martin Series 4
which apparently i have lost the taste for.
after 4 seasons, nothing has changed, not him by the community, nor the community by him
except to more and more tolerate or make excuses for his behavior.
This isn't just a character quirky flaw but a genuine disorder yet not once has anyone uttered the word Aspergers.
It was funny for a a couple of seasons now it just made me uncomfortable.

the Last Grenade (1969) Stanley Baker, Alex Cord..some low budget action movie i haven't seen in 35 years
but it's on dvd now. Even though it is probably an intolerably crappy movie - i liked it when i was 11 and i vowed to buy it when it came out. So now it's on the shelf.

There are still a handful of movies from my childhood i need to acquire merely because i vowed to have them.
still looking for another stanley baker: Perfect Friday (1970)

Andrew, can you let us know what the BR version of Akira is like? I'm curious on whether traditional cel has any advantage in high rez vs reg dvd. I can see CGI doing better but with cel it's not really rez bound that I can see.

I've had it for a while now, and it looks absolutely stunning. The transfer definitely serves the film well. You do see some dust and such here and there from the cels, but it's a drastic improvement on Pioneer's DVD, which I always found looked a touch soft.

Now if only they had included the classic Streamline Pictures dub.

Steve is definitely the one to listen to. I've yet to watch it on an HD set, so I can't really comment. DVD Beaver has some stills up, which give some idea of the quality of the image. I will say, however, that I have seen some traditional cel animation in HD and, when done right, the effect is stunning.

I think it was $15 off Amazon. The way I see it, I'd pay $7.50 for either on SD, so it's worth it for the Blu.

I've hesitated on a couple of standard titles--Umberto D comes to mind--because I just have a feeling I'd be double dipping for Blu all too soon.

Yeah but on stuff as recent as the War Trilogy, if Criterion had the high-def rights to the titles they would have issued them with the regular DVD releases. Or at least that is the way I'm looking at it.
