Before everybody starts screaming bloody murder and all the usual phrases, I have two words for you: JOSH HOLLOWAY. "Rockford Files" was always about Rockford himself and not the cases. And, if you saw the arc for Sawyer on the last season of "Lost" (or previous one's for that matter), you know (a) Josh can act when given the right script/notes and (b) he'd be as close to a perfect modern-day Rockford as we could get out of the youth-obsessed network people in charge of these things. So yes, hate the idea of a "Rockford Files" remake (Garner will always be the man) but don't close your mind to the idea of a remake working if the right actor is chosen. This one lives or dies on casting the lead, period.

I'm the biggest "CI" fan on this site (move aside Joyce! ) and even I say it'd be better off if they just end the show already. It's been a good run and the repeats hold extremely well. Shame, Goldblum and Burrows were gelling in their detective roles toward the end.

Big, big big Doctor Who news....
Calling all Doctor Who fans - this is huge news!

The BBC have revealed that the next series of Doctor Who will be split into two parts - one in Spring and one in Autumn.

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

Steven Moffat said: "The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

We will get 7 episodes in Spring and 6 in Autumn

People can say what they want about Chuck but no show on TV does better stunt casting.

For a while NBC's "Heroes" was also pretty good at casting fan service stars (William Katt, Ray Parks, Malcolm McDowell, etc.) but it felt and came across as stunts. I don't watch "Chuck" so I don't know if the many guest stars the show gets are put to good use or not but it's a pretty damn impressive roster.

- The premiere of "Dancing With the Stars" was the nights top show with a 5.0 rating/13 share in the key adults 18-49 demographic from 8-10 p.m.. "Dancing With the Stars" was up 22 percent from its last fall premiere, but down 22 percent from its most recent premiere last spring. Boosted by "DWTS," literary detective series "Castle" scored a 2.8/8. This year's edition of "Dancing with the Stars" features Bristol Palin, David Hasselhoff and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. Overall, ABC averaged a 4.2/11 from 8-11 p.m.

- Second place went to CBS with a 3.8/10 average thanks to its comedy block and a strong debut performance from "Hawaii Five-0." CBS' lineup held up well without "The Big Bang Theory," which moved to Thursdays this fall. "Two and a Half Men" led the way with a 4.8/12, a 7 percent increase from last year's numbers. With the "Two and a Half Men" lead-in, "Mike and Moly" had a strong debut score of 3.9/10. "Mike and Molly" won the 9:30 p.m. time slot, but it was down 17 percent from "Big Bang Theory's" numbers in the spot last fall. "Hawaii Five-0" won from 10-11 p.m. with an impressive 3.8/10. Without a lead-in from "Big Bang," "Hawaii Five-0" was down 12 percent from "CSI Miami's" 2009 premiere in the same time slot.

- NBC scored a 2.8/7 primetime average, but "The Event" scored impressive ratings from 9-10 p.m. "The Event" built on it's lead-in from the season four premiere of "Chuck" by 76 percent. It was up 68% from the premiere of "Trauma" last fall. At 10, "Chase" scored a soft 2.5/7.

- Fox had a rough night and woke up in fourth place. Season seven of the medical drama "House" brought in a 4.1/11, down 39 percent from its season six premiere. The debut of the Texas con man soap "Lone Star" posted a 1.3/3, just two tenths of a point ahead of The CW's "Gossip Girl" from 9-10 p.m. Overall, Fox earned a 2.7/7 primetime average.

Bottom line: Fox fell off a cliff due to "House" dropping like a brick (guess fans don't want to see the good doctor with a girlfriend), NBC rose on interest of "The Event" (whether it keeps up depends on whether viewers liked what they saw) and CBS and ABC remained pretty much where they were a year ago. Fox is in trouble already and, unlike years past, there's no certainty that "American Idol" will save the season for the network come January. Isn't TV fun?

liked the reboot, moves like gangbusters but seriously these guys are like the mormon twins go to paradise..

1 Running Wilde...run away, run very far away. will arnett isn't THAT funny and this show is aimed at 8 year olds.

2 Raising Hope....i thought it was wickedly witty and very smartly written, endlessly quotable - a topless chloris leachman? you had me at Martha Plimpton...now watch FOX strangle it to death. "what the devil are you ladies in such a a hurry for, you know we're goin' to scrub terlits right?"

3. Detroit 187 - your standard issue cop show. Likable leads, um..um...let me think...oh yeah they bleep out the vulgarities...there you go cutting edge tv for the 21st century. yawn.

I can already see the bullet point on the back of the DVD Box Set: 'Uncensored language too strong for network TV.' After "Law & Order," "Life on Mars," that Peter Jackson movie about the dead girl and now "Detroit 1-8-7" it's time for Michael Imperioli to give up being a movie/TV cop and appear as a bad guy somewhere. He's not leading man material.

Been busy so I've been DVR'ing everything new, and I got into it a bit tonight.
First up was Mike & Molly, while it's a rather standard sitcom, a solid cast boosts this one, and having sitcom legend James Burrows direct can only help. Let's see what episode two brings.
Detroit 1-8-7. My bad, this is a paint by numbers cop show, and none of the cast impressed me.
Boardwalk Empire, mightily interesting, once again, let's see if episode two can keep it up.
Hawaii 5.0 Now while I had virtually zero respect for any remake of a great show, they took what would still work (the theme, beautiful scenery, bikini clad babes, McGarret's classic Mercury) and threw out the rest, filling it in with very good actors, built in nerd appeal (Grace Park will get an audience all by her lonesome), a great starting storyline, a terrific villain (James Marsters always delivers), and you have a winner! Additional props for a Jean Smart appearance, (why was McGarret's death such a personal thing, hmm?), great writing, a great little advertisement for the iPhone, and for simply re-recording the theme, as is, and not mucking it up with techno or some other equally annoying addition. It made me wanna break out my own drums to play along!
Of course, I couldn't resist the season opener of Modern Family, and well, they picked up right where they left off. Rock solid, superb writing and acting, and it's still knocking it over the fence.

when i figured out that it was a reboot not a 'son of 5-oh' i got excited.

but still the guy has a stick up his butt just like the last guy - if the only selling point was him as a lead i'd have bailed after the credits.

Ok, continued on with the new stuff for this season, first up was Big Bang Theory, whereupon Sheldon attempts to calculate how many guys Penny has been with, much to her regret, as he asks her for help on his first ever "date". Meanwhile, Howard's robotic hand is giving him...problems, when he uses it in an unapproved manner. Firing on all eight, right off the bat, funny, funny, funny, especially Penny's threat to Sheldon. Glad to see it back.
Next up was a repeat of Modern Family, extremely funny, and once again, the kid that plays Manny steals the show. For a kid of 10 or 11, he's a brilliant actor, and Eric Stonestreet is equally brilliant, soooo much talent on this show.
Next was Raising Hope, the cast looked promising, the premise looked promising, but once I saw "Created and written by Greg Garcia", I knew it was going to be good. I was not disappointed in the least, the characters are all well fleshed out for a pilot, the lead a like-able doofus, his mom has what can be a killer role for Martha Plimpton, and they tossed Cloris Leachman in for good measure. Extremely funny, but like My Name I Earl, plenty of heart in this dysfunctional, white trash family. "Aw man, I was gonna grill some burgers this weekend!" One can only hope the show is based somewhere in "Camden County" and maybe we'll see Jason Lee back in his best ever role as "Earl" gets a shoutout in the newscast.
Finished up with Outsourced, it's got potential, but I don't think it'll last as the culture clash dynamic of the show will either be solved too quickly in an effort to establish the characters, or they'll give up on the dynamic and shoot for the by-the-numbers "fish out of water" sitcom. Don't know who any of the people are are except Dietrich Bader, and for a guy who's usually funny, he isn't so far.

Ok, the sitcoms are all done and Better With You rocks, appealing leads (Jennifer Finnegan, where have you been all my life?), great writing, and once again, James Burrows directing (has he cloned himself, or is he insanely busy?) and this one's great right out of the box. Bringing in veteran funny people Debra Jo Rupp (the glue that held That 70's Show together) and Kurt Fuller to be the parents is a great touch, but the four leads all work well and Jake Lacy is a breakout star in the making as the very dumb, but incredibly straight up Casey. I'm realizing that all the new shows can't have Burrows directing every episode, so the show that gets him every week will have the best shot.
Sh*t My Dad Says, despite the very likeable Nicole Sullivan in a supporting role, this one's already tired, a child returns home to bond/clash with a parent. Shatner's great, but the rest of it's just weak and already forgettable, with only one standout line "Why can't anyone do a good impression of me?" James Burrows finally misses the mark in the debuts. Won't last, why can Lifetime just give Sullivan another season of Rita Rocks?
Running Wilde, okay, someone wanna tell Will Arnett his wife's the funny one? Tired, predictable, not really original, and other than an interesting job by Peter Serafinowicz as a truly looney neighbor, this one's not funny, and even Keri Russell looking better than ever isn't going to help it. I think I got two chuckles out of it, and not one belly laugh, whereas Better With You had me falling out of my chair several times, as did Mike & Molly.
We shall see how the rest of it goes, time for a repeat of Hawaii 5.0!!!

Well, last night I attempted to get through it, but it was rather wretched. The second episode of Mike & Molly was even better than the debut as Melissa McCarthy got to play drunk/on coedine/diet pills and she knocked it out of the park. The real surprise here is quickly becoming Billy Gardell who seemed like a one-note joke in most of his work, but he's making Mike Biggs an interesting, and much deeper character than I've ever seen him do before. He's only done two episodes, but he's very, very good so far.
Hawaii 5.0 was, once again, excellent, full of action, and the characters are starting to get to know each other better. "What? Is that gonna be your 'thing' now?" Fun, fun, fun, and whaddaya know? They're not 100% certain James Marsters character is dead yet. Cooool.....
Boardwalk Empire is quickly becoming a fave, it's extremely well done with HBO's usual feature film production values, great acting, writing etc. Steve Buscemi is tearing it up, and it's fun to see all kinds of talented people popping up in unexpected spots, like Dabney Coleman. I wonder if it's easier to create a show where you don't have to worry about selling ad time to make it fly.

Now for second episodes of Running Wilde and Raising Hope!

OK, loaded up more new eps to watch and...
South Park is back, and falling off the furniture funny as usual as Cartman wants to be a NASCAR driver, but feels he'll never get the chance because he's "too rich and too intelligent". Somehow, Parker and Stone avoid being sued, but let's just say a particular manufacturer will not appreciate this episode at all. AT ALL.
Mike and Molly is off and running, and when she whips his ass in bowling, they both learn a few lessons.
Raising Hope, which I'm glad to see given a full season pickup as it's getting better each week, and well, Cloris Leachman being a Jenga savant, but ONLY while listening to They MIght Be Giants was one of the looniest ideas I've ever seen.
Better With You rocked again, with a cast of three weeks already acting like five season veterans, and I'll stand by my prediction that Jake Lacy will be a breakout star.
Hawaii 5.0, the name is established, and all cop shows should be this good!
Melissa and Joey, yes, it's a rather cutesy premise to put two 90's stars back in primetime, but one, Joey Lawrence can actually act, and two, this thing is pretty well written, and three, making a quick change from the smart alecky assistant to the new one, played by Lucy DeVito, who is a complete nutcase, was a smart move. Gee, her dad's Danny DeVito and her mother's Rhea Perlman, wonder where she got the comic chops? Once again, picked up for a full season.

Lots of David Cross can't hurt, and by the way, who has a vodka room? If it's real, I'm appalled, if it's a comic invention for the rich doofus, it's genius.
Modern Family, ok, it's already one of the best things on TV, but when Mitch and Cameron's friend Pepper (played by Nathan Lane, no less) shows up, it's even better. Not needed as the cast does fine by themselves, but in small doses, talented guest stars can work, just don't overdo it!

I'm glad someone else is enjoying this. I think it's been increasingly fun with each episode, but the TV critics mostly seem to despise it. It's obviously not Arrested Development, but it's still quite entertaining.

So far so good with Mike & Molly as they handle a delicate situation with laughs and some heart, and the diner guy gets to tag along and he gets some wickedly funny lines. However, Cloris Leachman shows what 50-odd years of experience can do in Raising Hope by ripping off a hysterically funny one-liner in another superb episode. Despite a truly lame start, Running Wilde is finally on track with the old "misunderstood intentions/conversations" bit, but Arnett finally shines here in a truly bizarre scene involving washing a Corvette. The neighbor gets to show his chops though with what may be the worst (but funniest) "tough guy New York" accent ever filmed and Keri Russell is the goofiest TV mom in awhile. "Incredibly Trite Dialogue William Shatner Says" is fading fast after three whole episodes, however, the funniest thing on the show so far was a guest appearance by Tim Bagley, and he shows back up again to torment Shatner, who knows, if they keep him around, it might improve.
On the "why the hell did I never watch this?" side, I've been working my way through Smallville, and I'm impressed by a few things; one, it's not just some teenybopper soap opera, although there's elements of it, two, the cast is fairly solid (John "Bo Duke" Schneider can act? Who knew?) and mostly unknowns, three, they have not jumped right into him being Superman. We spend a good chunk of the first season just figuring out what he can do. Far more impressive than the cocky as hell Superman of film who can do anything smoothly as can be. And lastly, Kryptonite affects other people! Cooooool. One minor laugh is the fact that being a WB show, it is extremely trendy as far as fashion and tech, decade old stuff being presented as "high tech" is pretty funny. Yeah, that iMac G3 266 was pretty slick back then....

Is it me or does Hawaii 5-O smack of Miami Vice? it's not the one man show of the original, but it's still not using it's ensemble to best advantage. O'Laughlin really isn't that interesting to follow around for an hour.
