help identify MacGuyver like show

Postby mkiker2089 » Mon Nov 08, 2010 8:49 pm

There was a show that came on to compete against MacGuyver. It was a little more synical and stared a character with photographic memory. Any clues what it was. The guy in it looks like Jonathon Young but isn't if I recall.

This is dimly ringing a bell, but no name is coming to mind. I'll have to think further....

which year did it run?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Un ... _schedules

okay now you're killing me.
i just scanned every schedule for every year mac ran.
he always ran in the 'family hour' and almost always opposite sit coms.

the closest thing i found was 'the wizard' which starred the diminutive David Rappaport.

any other hints?

Others have suggested that also, but that's not it. The actor looked like a dark haired version of Jonathon Young. I think that's his name. They guy who was on Sanctuary and guest spots on Eureka. The show was later into Mac's run. I'm guessing mid 80s. I don't know what network either. It didn't run against Mac I don't think. That would have been suicide at the time.

The star had a perfect memory. I remember there was joke that he was "certified". They said "you mean certifiable" and snickered. He said no and the short version is that the IRS counts his recollection as a receipt.

They had an episode with monkey intelligence also. Could have been a chimp. It typed "was the best of times, was the wort of times." He thought the typo was part of the training to fool people into thinking the monkey was smart, but the monkey probably was really smart.

There was one more episode where there was a super computer that could use logic to find out all kinds of stuff, to the point of predicting the future. The guy asked the computer to tell him which arm his watch was one. The computer said something like "you stand like a left handed person so your watch would normally be on your right arm, but since you asked the question it must be a trick therefore your watch is really on your left arm"

There was a mid-70s show called The Delphi Bureau, starring Lawrence Luckenbill as a govt agent w/ a photographic memory.

Too early. I was born in 75 and remember it being new. It also used computers heavily as they were just starting to reach consumer saturation.

aHA! Perhaps this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probe_(1988_TV_series)
Probe is a 1988 American television pilot and subsequent TV series, created by television mystery writer William Link and noted science fiction author Isaac Asimov. It aired on ABC. Michael B. Wagner, a veteran television writer, wrote the two-hour pilot, and became Executive Producer for the series. The pilot and series starred Parker Stevenson as Austin James, a misanthropic genius who solved high tech crimes, and Ashley Crow as James' new secretary Mickey Castle.

That would be it I think. I google searched Stevenson and that's the guy.

Another lost show I fear. This search reminded me of Hotel, and The Wizard as well. I hope Netflix or Hulu get on the ball and find these.

Just watched a couple clips on You tube, saw a couple episodes posted.

Hmm, seems vaguely familiar - especially from the opening titles...
