R.I.P. Don Meredith

Yup, Dandy Don has passed on. The "fun" guy in the original Monday Night Football trio, he made a career out of razzing Cossel and feeding Frank Gifford some great lines. He was also instrumental in bringing Cossel down after he compared Alvin Garret of the Washington Redskins to a "little monkey". When enraged callers cut loose on Cossel, and he responded by denying making the statement, Meredith said, "we can rewatch the tape, Howard, you DID say it". A most treasured part of my early years of watching football. He will be missed.

Let's not forget that Meredith's Lipton Iced Tea commercials in the '70s gave us the totally awesome catchphrase, "Dang me, that's good!" (Used with smarmy irony by my family to describe tasty beverages for over three decades.)
