I can't comment on the remake, having not seen it yet. But I do disagree with the cited NY Times opinion of the original. It's actually a pretty suspenseful movie and doesn't "lack imagination". Of course, since it was directed by Robert Fuest and co-written by Brian Clemens & Terry Nation, that's somewhat of a given.

I get the impression you haven't seen the original. If you haven't, I'd recommend it.

You are correct; I have not seen the original. If I run into it in my travels, I would give it a shot based on your suggestion... but it speaks volumes about the remake that I really don't want to see the original now.
