Straight to video

Postby Andrew Forbes » Sun May 15, 2011 4:18 pm

I watched The Tournament the other day. Nothing original, no frills, just solid action done properly. It's built on a foundation of cliches, but it hits all the right beats and has some very well-staged carnage. It's one of the rare DTV titles I've watched that didn't feel undercooked or too ambitious for the budget. Has anyone else had any pleasant straight-to-video surprises they'd like to share?

Universal Soldier - Regeneration - was shocked how solid the film was. In fact, it was solid enough that I ended up reviewing all three of the Van Damme films in the series http://experiencecinematic.blogspot.com ... on-of.html

I very much dug Sniper Reloaded. It's a generic action flick building upon a much more stylish, suspense-oriented Tom Berenger/Billy Zane collaboration. That said, it delivers the action in spades, has a likeable lead, and has Zane deadpanning dialogue and dropping bad guys with single shot bravado.
