Avast has no spam or advertising. As a matter of fact, it has a significantly smaller footprint than McAfee or Norton products, both of which are bloated pigs that slow down a system and muck ups its performance.
I was worried about Footprints.. I'm big on privacy issues and when I glanced over at the "privacy statement" over at Norton and didn't find it all that attractive. I had a look at McAfee's "privacy statement" and while it was, as most are, a bit vague, I got the impression that it wasn't as big an issue as it was with Norton.
The only reason I decided to switch over to a more "commercial" type of anti-vrius software was because I have used many of the free one's before, unfortunately I've never heard of the one you all mentioned on this board and if I did I would have gone with that instead. I value everyone's opinion around here.
McAfee hasn't been that much of a speed hog, there are a few delays here and there but for the most part it's doing just fine for me. I guess I have that psychological marketing thing these high cost anti-viral programs put in your head. Nothing is or will ever be bullet proof but considering the issues I've had with viruses since I moved to the Outer Banks back in January, I actually don't mind the expense.
Sadly, now that I don't have a real home, I'm going to need even more protection, especially using wi fi hubs like the library and coffee shops.
I bought a six month subscription for the HideMYASS IP thing a month or so ago, I didn't really use it all that much but will probably download it onto my new laptop for the basic reason of not having a static IP address. I've done some research on the "hiding your IP" thing and it looks like HideMYASS seems to be the most private. I'm frankly not smart enough to use the free IP thing that's out right now. Don't recall the name..
