Replace "20-something" with "woman" and think about how that sentence reads. The employees who were a**holes happened to be in their twenties. The young don't hold a monopoly on bad service, just as old men don't make up the entire population of grumps with a fear of change.Paul Kile wrote:they acted like they were doing me a favor by interrupting their slack-jawed 20-something yammering to stoop to help an old Baby Boomer find his way to the aviation book section.

Paul Kile wrote:In this case, I don't fully agree with your causality. The state of the economy is only a contributing factor to Border's demise. The root cause is Border's operation was LAME and couldn't hold a candle to Barnes and Noble for customer service.
Every time I would go into Borders I was amazed at the disorganized layout, the skimpy selections, and above all, the inattentiveness of the employees. It always took forever to attract their attention, and when I finally did, they acted like they were doing me a favor by interrupting their slack-jawed 20-something yammering to stoop to help an old Baby Boomer find his way to the aviation book section. And this wasn't limited to just one store, I had similar frustrations at stores in various places around the country.
So in some ways, a lousy economy every few years is good in that it winnows out the weaker players. So for the few employees who actually cared to do a good job at Borders (I never saw them, but they must be a few out there) I hope they find work. But for Border's Management who stood by and tolerated the overall mediocrity, good riddance!

A single white male can die in the street because where I live they won't offer assistance under any circumstances. I looked up medicaids website and technically they are correct. It says in several places that it's for "families". Now the term family could be construed in many ways (I'm sure it's not a legal term for that reason) however the people where I live interpret that to mean you have to have underage children in your custody.

Steve, our local Hastings Books & Video is blessed to have at least a few employees who are obviously as passonate about movies as you are, and they are FANTASTIC. It's a pleasure patronizing their store, and I tip my hat to them (and to you). But that's for my movie needs.
As for books, it took me nearly 38 years to realize what a wonderful resource a local library is (I'm a slow learner, what can I say?). I haven't darkened the doorstep of a bookstore in ages.

Oh our customers love us. I'm at work on a Friday afternoon- I started at noon when I unlocked the door, and I won't leave until close at 11pm, but I wouldn't have it any other way - Friday nights are GREAT fun. I tell everyone we hire - Don't put on that phony smile or corporate attitude, be "Friendly" not polite, be honest, and never dismiss anyone unless they dismiss you first. It's worked pretty well for us in a shrinking market, and now that our chief competition is gone, things have been downright crazy
