First PROMETHEUS, now THIS!

Following his work on Prometheus, Ridley Scott is ready to return to the world of "Blade Runner," reports Deadline. The site says that Scott is committing to direct and produce "a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film."

While the site says it is not sure if the project will be a sequel or prequel to the 1982 film, Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment announced earlier this year that they had secured film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic sci-fi original.

Back then, Alcon said that the franchise rights "would be all-inclusive, but exclude rights to remake the original. The Company, however, may produce projects based on situations introduced in the original film."

Hmmmmm... I definitely think that Ridley still has some greatness in him (he hasn't made a bad film since GI Jane in my own humble opinion).

If he pulls a Prometheus and creates a new sci-fi film laced with Blade Runner's DNA, i'd be ecstatic!

I'm honestly not sure about this. Ridley better have a really good story idea for this follow-up/prequel/midquel, and I'm not sure whether I want to see a de-aged Harrison Ford and Sean Young.

But truthfully, I'm shocked about this. I never thought Ridley would return for a second go-round in the BR universe.

As long as its not anything like the de-aged Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button *shudder*

I remember word going around way back that Ridley had purchased a ton of sets with the intention of making BR2, but then passed them on to another sci-fi flick or something (I recall Judge Dredd and The Fifth Element or something... ) It's not all that surprising to me, and since Alcon first trumpeted the rights acquisition they have been talking about "respecting the original film in every way" and wanting Ridley to be involved.

Blade Runner was a film that was ridiculously ahead of its time, lofty ideas and even more insanity in the art and design departments, i don't expect the same level of insanity on this go around, but as long as Ridley has something to say, some manner of statement to make, i'm sure we'll get a respectable film.

As much as I love Blade Runner I'd rather not see a sequel at this point. How many sequels made decades after the original turn out good? Even if done well, there's always such a huge disconnect.

Between the original and Alien being so groundbreaking, I wish Ridley Scott would've made more sci-fi over the years. If he's returning to the genre now, I'd rather him show us new worlds instead.
+1. this is very interesting.

Well, I just didn't expect Ridley come back as a director. I honestly expected him to be involved as a producer or "creative consultant" if it got off the ground at all. I'm wondering who Alcon and Scott will choose to pen the script, will they go back to Hampton Fancher and David Peoples or someone more experienced with Ridley's latest work like Brian Helgeland? Whoever writes it has huge shoes to fill, either it be their own or someone else's.

And I wonder if Syd Mead will return to design the sets. He did after all agree to do Neil Blomkamp's Elysium...

I would not mind another film set in the same world as Blade Runner but the idea of a sequel, or even a prequel doesn't do much for me at this stage.

I'm thinking this is more likely. Since Rid owns the rights to The Forever War, maybe he'll spin that into Blade Runner somehow? Can't say that wouldn't be freaking awesome.

I didn't know there were three literary sequels to Blade Runner written by novelist & Phillip K. Dick friend K.W. Jeter.

What a shame that they decided to burn every print of the original in order to fuel the sequel machine.

I love Blade Runner...I have no interest in a sequel...

Depending on what happens with Prometheus, my opinion could change, but I have a bad feeling I'm gonna hate that one too...

Scott just isn't the confident director he once was...i dunno, maybe it's just me.

I don't think it's you. Current Ridley Scott kind of reminds me of late career Hitchcock. There is always something in there worth digging into but taken as whole everything else around it lacks the confidence of his earlier work. I love the extended cut of Kingdom of Heaven and I love the loose way he seemed to work with on Matchstick Men but everything else he has done in the past decade or so is very, very hit & miss for me.

Thanks Harold...
as much as also love Kingdom of Heaven...when he makes the "enemy" one of the most reasonable men on the screen, it just takes too much tension out the film, I kept thinking that Jurusalem should just surrender, how bad could it be...

I think that's ultimately a part of the point. There were hard men on both sides, but the film ultimately teaches a message of tolerance, and unlike most of the Muslim world at the time, Saladin was actually one of the most forward thinking individuals of the era. As inaccurate as Kingdom of Heaven may be, historically speaking, the portrayal of Saladin is actually somewhat accurate, and based on several first hand accounts. Sure, Scott could have fudged history further and made a villain out of him, but again, the film's ultimate goal is a message of tolerance for both sides.

Also: American Gangster and Body of Lies both kick all kinds of ass.
