Is this the first remake of something that came out after 1990? My first reaction is this is the first remake that I can think of where I remember the original being released. Any other remake I can think of, their original came out before I can remember. I'm 31 BTW, born in 1980.
+1. this is very interesting.

Depends on whether or not you want to count Hulk, Punisher, Spider-Man and assorted foreign-language films.

I though about that, but the comic stuff are just reboots of franchises, and the foreign-to-English remakes are for a different (albeit stupid) purpose so people who don't want to watch a movie in some wacky foreign language can see a watered-down version in the comfort of English.

I meant more on the idea of "let's remake one of our own classics that stood alone," like how they did for True Grit.

Damn, Point Break is considered a classic? It's fun and all, but so is Tango and Cash.

Point Break is shit. That is all.
I love it. But it's shit.

I didn't mean to say that Point Break was a classic, though I suppose it's as much of a classic as say Commando or any other fun action flick of the time that people keep watching 20 years later.

So nobody follows what I'm asking?

As long as Keanu Reeves drowns at the very beginning of it and there is a quick funeral where they blow his ashes into the ocean, I'll be fine with it.

It's too vague a question to answer really because hollywood is always stealing from itself. I have no doubt that some post 90 movies have been remade. You said you didn't count reboots. What about movies that aren't officially remakes but are the same story with a different name. Strange Bedfellows came out in 2004 and was stolen as Chuck and Larry in 2007.

Now as far as something remade because they think the original is a classic, I don't really feel that vibe so it's hard to answer. To me remakes are more about making money without coming up with a new idea. Some are fun but most are pointless. La Fem Nakita (never could spell that right) was remade and it's pretty recent. I've read that a remake of Total Recall is in the works but I can't find the link now.

Then there are ones where the original is older but has subsequent remakes. Christmas Carol is the obvious first runner but 12 Angry Men, Alice in Wonderland, and pretty much anything Shakespearian fit in there.

I was trying to think of remakes that sucked so they remade it again. I know it's happened but I can't recall now. The Hulk is probably an example but it's a reboot also and personally I liked it anyway.
