Die Hard 5 Release Date Set

Another Die Hard movie. They've all been a lot of fun, but this franchise hasn't had a real identity. The first two held a formula ("terrorists take over X location with hostages"), but that was getting unbeleivable as of the first sequel. McClane had to joke about it himself, "how could the same thing happen to the same guy twice?"

Die Hard With A Vengeance expanded it, but the formula was changed. At least it had the Gruber connection to the prior series.

Live Free or Die Hard was all over the place, and felt like a normal action flick that happened to star John McClane. And it doesn't help that John McClane is basically the same character that Bruce Willis plays in most of his movies. So this could've been any action movie. It also had the "let's revive an old franchise" thing, as sequels to Rocky, Rambo, & Indiana Jones were all being released right around then.

But the Die Hard movies are still a blast. And the lesser movies I think are only considered so because they're being compared to the original which is the mother of all action movies. And the titles make me chuckle - this one's called A Good Day to Die Hard.
+1. this is very interesting.

Die Hard and Die Hard 2: Die Harder are the only real films in the franchise for me. As much as I love Die Hard With a Vengeance, it feels more like a sequel to The Last Boy Scout than Die Hard. McClaine's whole thing was that you just couldn't stop the bastard, and after a nice arc with Holly in the first two films, he's already beaten and lost when #3 opens up. It's not John McClaine, it's Bruce Willis. The fourth just took the series off the rails entirely. Every time I watch one of the first two flicks, I hate the fourth more and more.

I agree. Holly & John not working out somewhat dillutes the first two movies having them live happily ever after together. What was the story with that, did Bonnie Bedelia not want to come back, or were they not able to write anything for her?

Half the problem was that Die Hard With a Vengeance was originally a generic action script that was not meant to be a Die Hard movie. Change the hero to John McClane and the villain to Gruber and poof, you've got a Die Hard sequel!

I can't say I blame them. How many Bruce Willis action flicks have bombed? They would've done much better if they were named Die Hard.

Perhaps "A Good Day to Die Hard" refers to terrorists tampering with the world's Viagra supply?

McClaine is more of a Cialis guy anyway.
