The wonderful world of high-def

Upcoming classic titles

Postby Andrew Forbes » Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:30 pm

I figured it might make sense to collect all the classics release news in one thread for those who are interested. For the purposes of this list, let's define classics loosely as pre-1975 (I know, this might be problematic for some of you...). If anyone hears any news about upcoming classic releases, add them. (via blu-ray.com)

November:
The Big Country (formerly a Wal-Mart exclusive)
Phantom of the Opera
Little Big Man
One-Eyed Jacks
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)
The Collector
Mysterious Island
West Side Story
The Rules of the Game (Criterion)
12 Angry Men (Criterion)
The Birth of a Nation (KINO)
Way Down East (KINO)
Horror Express

December:
Tora! Tora! Tora!
The Lady Vanishes (Criterion)
Medea (1969, Pasolini)
Design for Living (Criterion)
Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection
Meet Me in St. Louis
Stars and Stripes Forever
Tokyo Drifter (Criterion)
Branded to Kill (Criterion)
Seven Chances (KINO)
Sherlock Holmes (KINO, 1920)
Godzilla vs Megalon
Nothing Sacred (KINO)
A Farewell to Arms (1932, KINO)

January:
Looney Tunes Showcase vol.1 (1936-1966)
The Hellstrom Chronicle
Belle de Jour (Criterion)
Gojira (Criterion)
The Moment of Truth (Criterion)
The Iron Rose
Shiver of the Vampires
The Nude Vampire
Fascination
Lips of Blood
Night Train Murders
The Terrorists (1974)
Wings (1927)

February:
Lady and the Tramp
A Star is Born (KINO, 1937)
On the Bowery
Fort Apache
Baba Yaga

March:
Strip Nude for your Killer

Nice list. Definitely looking forward to some of these. I will make a note that the Looney Tunes Showcase disc you have listed is actually just the first disc of the 3-Disc Looney Tunes Platinum Collection set being released this month.

I read a review of the blu-ray for One Eyed Jacks that said stay away at all costs. Which is kind of a pity because I really kind of like that movie.

For a flick that had been lost in Bargain Bin PD hell for years, it's probably as good as it's gonna get.

Not a big Jerry fan (must be no French blood in the family tree) but I do enjoy The Geisha Boy which has some really good sight gags and a very funny bit with Sessue Hayakawa and a certain bridge. ;-)

2012 at last report for the 50th anniversary. I'll believe it when (if) I see it.

Tsk. That probably means bare bones MGM editions. Let's hope DNR was not too liberally applied.

Yeah, but MGM has been good about leaving grain in their catalog titles so far, with the exception of a couple of early missteps (TGTBATU). And titles like The Big Country have looked great. There won't be any significant restoration, but PQ will probably be at the high-end of decent.

^^^ And that pretty much takes care of the slate of Universal HD-DVD catalogue titles that had yet to appear on Blu-ray: "Scent of a Woman," "Sea of Love," "Mystery Men," "Bone Collector," etc.

March 20
Lady for a Day (1933) Frank Capra's first adaptation of this story, which he remade in 1961 as Pocketful of Miracles.
Lost Keaton: Sixteen Comedy Shorts (1934-1937, KINO)

April 24
Red House (1947, Film Chest)
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946, Film Chest) Film Chest has previously released The Stranger and Kansas City Confidential in extremely soft versions, so their specialty appears to be public domain cheapies. Let's hope they do a better job on these.

Despite Fox not releasing any information yet, Screen Archives Entertainment has announced an April 3rd street date for an exclusive release of The Grapes of Wrath and Zorba the Greek. TGoW is high on my wishlist, so I am very excited about this, although it looks as though it will only be available by order through Screen Archives website. It is not clear whether or not these will be limited to 3,000 copies as with SAE's Twilight Time releases.

Olive Films has also announced a few more notable titles (they are quickly becoming my favorite BD releasing company): Byron Haskin's Silver City (1951) and Denver and Rio Grande (1952), and Nicholas Ray's (!) Run for Cover (1955). They are scheduled for release on May 22.

On June 26th, KINO will be releasing Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936)

Keoma is coming on May 15th in a double feature with The Grand Duel from Mill Creek. Mill Creek has done some seriously shitty releases, but they've also put out a few discs that are decent, despite being completely unrestored. I hope this release is at least a technically competent transfer of a rough print. I've been dying to see Keoma!
