I was racking my brain to come up with ten female directors and I'm three short. I'm mainly interested in directors that have made more than one film. Here's what I have so far, feel free to add more.

Larisa Shepitko's work is allegedly worth checking out. Criterion put out a couple of her films in an Eclipse series, but I never did get around to seeing them.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dorothy Arzner yet.
She was the first female director to join the guild and was essentially the only women directing Hollywood films during the 30's.
