condensing collection

i have culled my collection down as much as i dared..it's about 1500 discs down from 2500
to make more room i'd like to experiment with ripping to an external drive
i'm looking for feedback on this.
i have a 2TB that is mostly empty but i would buy another dedicated drive if needed.
I need to look at having fewer bookcases for these

My wife would love a response to this question as well. We have a small-ish 2-bedroom condo and the second bedroom is being used as a den/gym/DVD library.

I'd be nervous about shifting everything to digital. Is it as easy as having the movies as files on a hard drive that you can play? Can you hook the hard drive up to your TV or PS3 and select from there? I'm also the type to buy a couple of big hard drives in case one dies.

And I like my DVD displays still, I wish we could cull a shelf or so at least.

and if we take all the material off the discs..then we can only fit about 128 on 1 TB.
that's not a lot in my case.
it is still something i am going to study
i am on my mission to get rid of half of everything i own
but i don't WANT to lose my movies
but right now they take up a huge portion of my living room

my computer is in my office, i spend enough time there.
and my laptop is dinky and i LIKE watching movies on my TV
as a matter of fact i am thinking of buying a flatscreen this year.

i think that's too rich for me. i'm still a poor church mouse.
i was hoping i could sell a few hundred dvds and get some more $$$
but i don't want to sell em without ripping them

My friend does this but normally for ripping it to another DVD, I assume it would apply to a hard drive as well.

You need a pass over, he uses his Panasonic DV Video Camera, hooks it up via a DVD player and plugs it into the computer.

You may also want to use some kind of software similar to or iMovie or iDVD.

I also have a Sima gizmo, they don't sell it anymore HOWEVER..

Molly - if you do a google search, you will find a website called "world imports" or "world import" - they have all the gizmos. I bought from them quite a few times.
