The Charge

Thought you knew it all?

The Case

10 Things You Don't Know About: Season 1 brings together eleven episodes of the History channel's series that delves into trivia as a means to greater understanding of popular historical topics. The 2012 show was launched on H2 in February. The conceit is simple: they take a president or historical figure, and then bring up ten little known facts that illuminate their roles in the larger picture of what their legacy is. For example they bring out on the "Abraham Lincoln" episode that he was sold by his father to a neighboring family as an indentured servant at a young age. This gives you a tidbit of trivia that later echoes what President Lincoln's role in history would become. The show is hosted by historian David Eisenbach who brings a fast talking and impassioned delivery to his narration. He knows his stuff, and it's fun to see him talk to common street people and ask them various "Would you believe?" or "Did you know?" questions that work into his topics.

This two-disc set covers the following topics:

* Benjamin Franklin
* Abraham Lincoln
* John F. Kennedy
* J. Edgar Hoover
* The OK Corral
* The Roosevelts
* The Mormons
* Pablo Escobar
* George Patton
* Caligula
* Adolf Hitler
* The Rat Pack

The DVD presentation is straightforward with clean, cable-quality standard definition 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers married to a two-channel stereo audio track. Things look clear, but sometimes the background music track engulfs and swallows the presenter's lecture. The balance between narration and noise is not great, and this may go back to the source material that is trying to punch up dry history with histrionic rock music. Extra features include edited-out segments from most of the shows. These are just more tidbits and a little more stuff to know about the topics.

10 Things You Don't Know About is an entertaining way to learn a bit of history and delve into details the average person would not know. It covers subjects you would think might be tapped dry, like President Lincoln or Adolf Hitler, but David Eisenbach manages to shake out some compelling key facts that entertain and illuminate. Sometimes the production values turn the music up to a bombastic level, but on the whole the show looks and sounds pretty good here on DVD. It will leave you thinking, and that's never a bad thing.

The Verdict

Guilty of bringing some fun, little-known history to the front.
